I have a book document with some 15 files, each containing dozens, if not hundreds of footnotes and several text frames. How can I apply ligatures to all footnotes and text frames, without getting insane?

What kind of ligatures? Usually ligatures such as fi and fl are handled automatically, if the font has them. If you want fancier ligatures, you probably need to make sure you're using an opentype font that has some, and then set the proper ligature settings in the paragraph styles.

Oh yes, of course: I thought the only way to access Ligatures was from the Character panel menu, and I was unaware that you can tick it on the Basic Character Formats pane.

It's so good that some kind of problems just disappear, isn't it?
