    Here's the problem:

    When I go to Print Booklet in Indesign CS5, on a Mac book Pro running OS X 10.6.4, and try to make a PDF file the page rotates the wrong direction. You can't make a PDF from the print window, or export to PDF from Print Booklet. There is no PDF printer in Indesign CS5 on OS X 10.6.4. The only way I can see to make a PDF from Print Booklet is to make a Postscript file and use Distiller to make the PDF. I'm using the printer, Postscript® File, with the PPD, Device Independent. That's where the problem occurs, there are no page rotation controls for this, so called, printer. It looks fine in the preview, but the page is always vertical with a horizontal image on it. I had the same issue with InDesign CS4, but I overcame it by using a different PPD, which gave me page rotation control. However in CS5, or OS X 10.6.4, I can't find any other PPDs.

    I have a page size of 5.5″x8.5″. The file is 8 pages long. I want to make a PDF in Printer spreads with the page size being 11″x8.5″, two pages per sheet. It folds and stitches in the middle.

    No help from Adobe:

    The most frustrating part of all of this is that I have been through all the hoops with Adobe and have had my case advanced to the highest level and they can't figure it out. To be honest, I don't think they understand the problem, so they can't begin to fix it. Even after I have given them my files they don't seem to have a full grasp of the issue.

    This may not be a fixable problem in InDesign, if I could just figure out how to get another printer PPD on the Mac, one that let me control the page rotation, I could work around the problem.

    Does anyone have any advice at all?

    It works fine for me. In the Print Booklet dialog I click the Print Settings button to go to InDesign's default print dialog, where I can then choose the printer and its settings. When done there, I click the OK button to return to the Print Booklet dialog and I can print to the Adobe PDF printer just fine.

    Are you sure that's what you're doing also? It kinda sounds like you're not going to the Print dialog from the Print Booklet dialog…

    I have no adobe PDF printer. According to Adobe tech support there is an issue with CS5 and Mac OS X 10.6.4 and it does not install.

    I think I have two issues.

    1. Is no control over the page rotation. This is the same I am in the regular print dialog, the print booklet print dialog and the print preset print dialog. If my printer is PostScript® File, and my PPD is Device Independent, I have no control over the page rotation. I over came this before by using a different PPD, but I don't understand how to install another PPD and I don't see any other PPDs in any print dialog box.

    2. When I try to make a PDF from Print Booklet it looks fine in the preview, but the end result PDF file has a Verticle 8.5″ wide x 11″ tall page and the image is 11″ wide x 8.5″ tall. My file is set up as half letter pages, or 5.5″ wide x 8.5″ tall and the PDF should have two pages side by side on a Landscape letter page, or 11″ wide x 8.5″ tall. With no PDF printer and no page rotation controls when making a PS file to distill to PDF I have no way to fix this issue.

    I had the same issue in CS4, but loaded a different PPD which gave me control of the page rotation and so I could over come the issue.

    So if you have the page size mentioned above, and the printer and PPD mentioned above, and you distill it to a PDF, it works fine?

    I finally got a call back from 3rd level tech support at Adobe and got the fix, two fixes in fact, and the answer to why there is no PDF printer installed with CS5.

    The reason PDF printer doesn't install with CS5 on Mac OS X 10.6.4 is a security setting on the Mac side. There are talks going on to resolve the issue.

    Fix 1. Edit the Adobe Distiller settings to force the page to rotate in the right direction. In my case this is a good fix because all my pages are 11″ wide x 8.5″ tall. The path is, Settings>Edit Adobe PDF Settings…, at the bottom of the first page that opens is Default Page Size. In my case I reversed the numbers and it fixed my problem. I then saved the settings with the word landscape on the end. If your doing a lot of different size pages and having this issue you'd have to make a new settings file for each page size.

    Fix 2. This is the fix I was looking for. I loaded the PPD for Adobe PDF 9. The file is ADPDF9.PPD. Here is the link to it, https://kb2.adobe.com/cps/852/c…..ADPDF9.PPD. Unfortunately this is a link right to the text file, not a download link, so you have to copy that text, paste it into a text editor and save it as ADPDF9.PPD. Adobe tech support took me to a download link and when I downloaded it the Mac OS added .txt to the end so I had to edit the file name, but for the life of me I could not get back to that link. Open the Indesign Folder in applications go to the presets folder and make a folder called PPDs, put the file, ADPDF9.PPD, in that folder. That was what he told me to name the folder, I'm not sure it has to be that name but I bet it does. I restarted InDesign, went to print booklet, edited the print settings, and picked Adobe PDF 9 from the PPD drop down list. This PPD lets me edit the rotation, and page size.

    Problem solved.

    Thank you so much for posting this fix. I was pulling my hair out. Booklets to PDF were so simple in CS3. I haven't yet mastered the differences in CS5. Thanks again!

    I'm having the same problem with cs5 and OS X 10.7.4! The “fix 2” didn't work using the link and steps above. I think it's because the different OS version. However, using the “fix1”, everything is working fine! I just had to set the inches, including bleed area plus the crop marks area.

    Thankyou very much, Kenton Smith! It's been 6 months i wasn't able to use this print booklet tool. But now, desingning a 40 pages magazine, i'm glad i found the solution here!
