Sounds strange but their it is….

Can you center a text frame that is flush left within a page?

      – I'm working in CS4 at the moment if that matters…

I know their are alignment features that will allow you to center text but this is based on the width of a text box. Could this be centered by something more relevant like the width of a line of text?

The reason I ask is that I am setting up an envelope design and would like the address area to be flush left as well as consistently in the center of the envelope. The print run will be automated so the option of manually centering the text will not work.

      Is their any other solution?

I have attached a visual example in case this does not make sense.

You could put the address text (flush left text) inside a text frame and then anchor that frame inside a text frame the width of the envelope, and then center that anchored frame horizontally and vertically. However, the problem is that you would want that anchored text frame to expand horizontally and vertically automatically based on the size of the text… and that is not possible. Maybe with a script.

      1. Create flush left text in a text frame

      2. Create a new large text frame (the frame that you want the text to be centered in)

      3. Copy and paste the flush left text frame into the big frame (it becomes an anchored object)

      4. Insert a flush space before and after your pasted text frame (type > insert white space > flush space)

      5. Select the paragraph and justify all lines

Now you can resize the frame and it will always be centered on the page.

Thanks David & James, I'll give this a go. I do think Dave is correct though as the frame will need to be manually resized to prevent word wrap / so this may not work well with an automated work flow. I'll fish around for a script but this seems to be more trouble than its worth. I may just have to text align center or forget about centering altogether. It's frustrating as I see this allot on mail pieces and would like to emulate this.
