    Odd issue with my Table of contents (TOC). I have threaded document with a table of contents but when I go to update the TOC it clears the entire thread of content (90 pages worth). The threads and pages are still there but the only text is the title text on the TOC and the last heading of the TOC (which actually updates the page number properly). So everything else just disappears.

    Any clues? I thought I'd check here before chasing it the rest of the day!

    oh and I'm using Indesign CS4 on Windows XP.

    A Table of Contents story gets a special 'tag' from InDesign, so it knows what it can throw away when replacing the old one. It sounds like this got messed up somewhere.

    Is your entire contents a story of its own? (I.e., not linked through with the rest of your document?)

    If so, can you check if it goes back to work if you create a new table of contents, place it alongside your pages, then cut-n-paste the newly generated text over the old contents?

    No, the TOC is part of the whole story and is threaded with the manual. I went into TOC settings yesterday and unchecked replace old table and it created the same situation on top of the old TOC. Nothing but a title and the last TOC entry…everything else gone.

    Should I make the TOC its own story? I think I might have had it that way and then changed it at some point in the recent past to be threaded into the document. Because the last entry in the TOC is actually the “Index” which I don't have included in the main story thread.

    Thanks! I'll try and seperate the TOC and the main story to see if that helps.

    Ok – Still no luck. I deleted the existing TOC from thread and replaced those pages with new pages not tied into the main thread. I went in to TOC options and even created a new TOC Style based on my paragraph style headings — I get the same result each time. No idea. I've checked my document headings and they are tagged with the appropriate paragraph styles but just aren't showing up. I get the TOC Title and the the last entry (which is the Index heading and is also not part of the main thread).

    So it appears my TOC style isn't going out and getting the data in the main thread.
