Local Overrides in Text Variables

I have a feeling that I already know the answer to this, but here goes. I'm working on a book where I'm using text variables to create the running heads, showing the chapter number and chapter title at the top of recto pages. I have one title that has an italic word in it: “Wal-Mart Is Not a Person.” My problem is that the italic Not is not italic in the running head.

Is my only option to override all the recto running heads in that chapter, convert all the text variables to text, then apply the italic myself? Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

You can override the text frame (I'm assuming it's on a master page now), but if you convert to text, you'll not get what you'd expect (the text that's shown now), but rather the name of the variable. Not quite useful, eh?

Local formatting in variable text is an option I sorely miss as well. Only one work-around, really: make a new master page (or spread) for that chapter only. It's not worth the trouble of overriding the header frame on each of your spreads, as that surely will bite you back some day.

So converting variables to text yields the name of the variable? That's hilarious!

I suppose creating a custom master is the right thing to do, rather than overriding every recto in the chapter. If it doesn't bite me back, it'll likely bite somebody back down the road. Thanks for the advice and insight!

Yup. That's your options unless you pay for a plugin… ;-)

What's wrong with paying for a plug-in if it saves you enough time!

      I know of a plug-in that might help… it's called PowerHeaders from in-tools.com. Check out, Harbs! ;)

So converting variables to text yields the name of the variable?

Ah — I needed this today. Fortunately, I remembered it wrong, and it does what you'd think!

Still a small consolation. Adobe should buy PowerHeaders!

Why did I wait so long before trying to find this on InDesignSecrets. Fed up changing the running headers because of an italic word in the chapter title. I'm off to find Harbs' stuff … Hooray for plugin makers!

Have to admit failure with the PowerHeader — simply don't understand how to get a running header with one or two italicised words going. There seem to be hundreds of dialogue boxes and queries. Might as well do what I've been doing all along (as I'm always meeting deadlines) and set up individual running headers on each chapter file. Sorry Harbs. You're too erudite for me.
