I have a 40-page indesign CS4 doc and I would like 40 1-page docs. Is there a way to split the doc automatically or an extension that will do this? Bonus points if it will ALSO automatically reassamble the split doc into a book!

I don't have any text boxes that go over more than 1 page, so there's no concern about that.

      Thanks for any help,

      Sheri

There's this new extension out at the moment, and you use your mind to control it, basically there's extensions that come out of your shoulders, called arms, attached to these are plugins called hands, which usually have 5 separate plugins EACH called fingers, that all work independently, yet in tandem with the arms and hands extension. It's all quite remarkable.

Oh I'm just teasing of course. There is something, try this out https://exportools.badiasoftware.com/

It should be able to make individual documents for all your indesign document. Unfortunately I don't know of a way to make it make a book for you.

But File New Book and drag the documents in from Finder/Explorer and arrange the book to your likings.

      Best of luck

Hmmm, was that to imply that I'm lazy? Oh I'll show you lazy… with my follow-up question. Once I have 40 1-page docs, can I batch export all 40 docs to jpgs at once? That is my end goal here.

(Why not export all the jpgs from one doc? I need each jpg to have and retain a descriptive name, and it's my understanding that you can't name pages in InDesign. So if I split the doc, I can name each INDD file and have it keep that name each time I export to jpg. Oh did you think I would only have to do the export ONCE? That's silly. Also in truth I have lots of these docs that need to be split up and turned to jpgs.)

Thank you for the exportools suggestion, I'm going to download that now.

Sheri, my first editor, Steve Roth, once taught me an important lesson: desktop publishers should always try to be as lazy as possible by automating everything — letting the computer do what we bought 'em for!

You might also try Peter Kahrel's Batch_Convert

      and Zevrix BatchOutput.

I think your built in extensions and plugins should handle everything lol.

Yes need to automate is important. I wasn't trying to lessen the importance of making the computer do the work. Only if it was easier sigh.

So you need to export all the pages as jpg and name them something different while it's saving?

I would export all the pages as jpg directly, they will all be separate. Then I'd use Bridge to Batch Rename the images.

      Would that suit?

The problem is, I can't batch rename because the names are descriptive, like us_2_0_1_multiship_chooseaddress.jpg, us_2_0_2_multiship_chooseshipping.jpg. The names describe the content. So I think it's best to split up the doc, give each INDD page/file a name, and that way, when I make revisions and export new jpgs, I won't have to name them each time. The extensions you guys suggested are working well.

David: do you know who taught me about batching and automation? My old boss Ben Ko, do you remember him? I think you used to work with us at Electronic Publishing Services, a textbook packager. “Back in the day.” Quark, Autopage, etc. We used to spend a LOT of time figuring out how to automate something. Probably longer than the actual work would have taken. Smile

Oh yes, I remember Ben well! Great guy. If you're out there, Ben: Hi!
