Did you know that when placing a Word or RTF file with the “Remove Styles and Formating” option selected, the Manual Page Breaks and Convert Bullets & Numbers to Text options under Preserve Styles and Formating still affect the placed result although being dimmed?

      Well, they do.

If you first select the Preserve option, set them, then go back to the Remove option, the new settings will affect how you text is converted.

For example, if the Word (or RTF) file contains an automatically numbered list, placing it with the Remove option selected will remove the automatic numbering. But, if you temporarily select the Preserve option, set the Convert Bullets & Numbers to Text option on, then return to Remove, you'll get the auto numbering converted to text during the placing process, et voilà, you've got them.

Same thing with the Manual Page Breaks options.

I guess someone in charge of the interface issues simply forgot to move them to under the Options group of the dialog.

BTW, It's been so also in CS3, and I guess (I've no way to check it) that the “Manual Page Breaks” issue dates to an even earlier era.

Interesting, Adi! It's a good point that features sometimes can affect the outcome, even though they appear to be grayed out. To change them, you have to get them “not gray”, then change them, then (sometimes) get them gray again. Crazy.

A true obscure feature, don't you think.
