LaughWe have just started a Church Directory making process. To populate our templates we use CSV files which come in from the field with a massive amount of errors. When I go to clean up the CSV files and remerge the data there are many out of order populated fields. Is there a shift command in InDesign I am missing so that I don't have to go back and manually shift the alphabetized church member pictures over? Is there a plug in that does it or am I just missing something all together? (Example: Someone has entered someone twice or Aunt Milly dies and I have to remove her from the directory-there are dozens to hundreds of pages mind you- is there a command that shifts it all back over?) Thanks in advance!

Are you using the Data Merge feature in InDesign to create these documents? Or some other plug-in, such as InData or EasyCatalog? There is no doubt that you want to have “clean” data before you import!

We are just using Data Merge. We clean the files before we do the Merge, but when some of the initial data is entered into the CSV files, it's often incorrect. The real problem is that none of us are ID experts and can't figure out how to delete a picture and info and shift it all over. Perhaps I should research on of these plug ins?

I see, so the data is just coming in wrong! In general, the procedure should be: Make the template and save it, import the data, turn on Preview to make sure it's more or less working, then import the data, then proof it. If it looks wrong, then choose File > Revert to back to the clean template. Go fix the CSV (or tab-delimited .txt) data and then import it again.

One other possible solution for “fixing empty records” is to set up your grid as a bunch of anchored objects. This doesn't work well with datamerge, but you could probably do it with InData: https://creativepro.com/auto-reflowing-images-in-a-grid.php
