Hi all and welcome me and you,

I've used to asked this question by mail to David and Anne-Marie, but they probably to busy, which is fine, so I decided to put it up here and hope if anyone can help me with it.

I'm working on this project where I have to make these small cards. These cards contain a product image, the name of the product and -here it comes- a shelf number and a position number. The shelves going from 1 till 12 and the position numbers on the shelves from 1 till 32.

I can tackle the position number by using “automatic page numbering”. But I can't get the shelves well numbered. I've tried “section markers”, but that doesn't get the job done.

To explain what I want in the end is:

      [Product A] [Product B] [Product B]

      [Shelve 1] [Position 1] [Shelve 1] [Position 2] [Shelve 1] [Position 2]

      [Product C] [Product C] [Product E]

      [Shelve 2] [Position 1] [Shelve 2] [Position 2] [Shelve 2] [Position 2]

I hope anyone can help me with this.

That's a little bit confusing. Perhaps you could post a screen shot of what you're trying to achieve, using Indesign mark out the areas that need what you need help with.

I'd create the shelf/position data in Excel, export to a comma delimited text file and use the data merge feature.

There can be up to 12/13 shelves and up to 32 positions (that differences per shelf). Thus, the solution by Roland won't work, because you don't know at first how many positions there will be untill you start creating the cards.

Well, hope these images make it somewhat more clear.

Sorry we didn't reply to the email, Eelco. As you can imagine, we get a huge amount of email. That's one of the reasons we wanted to start the forum! ;)

I think the automatic page number feature should work for you, but you would need to be very careful about the order of objects (the order in which each frame is created), and the styles you apply to Restart Numbering each time, and so on. It is not an easy project. Might be better to create it with a plug-in such as InData from emsoftware.com, which is more powerful than data merge.

I understand David, not a problem at all! Smile

The “page numbering” trick will work, but still struggling with the “shelf numbering”

I was thinking the “shelves” as “chapters and” the “positions” as “pages”, if that does help anyone.

I think you need to create and use two different LISTS. One for “shelves” and one for “position,” etc. Each list will increase separately. It is like having 1a, 1b, 1c, 2a, 2b, 3a, and so on. See https://creativepro.com/multi-level-automatic-numbering-in-indesign.php

For those who might run into the same problem, what I've done the last time is:

Creating a “section marker” for the shelves and a “current page marker” for the positions. This way I can select the want “cards”, fill in the shelf number and restart the page numbering. Did save some time, compared to do all this manually.

The only problem I've had was with “Jump to…” and “Move pages…”, because of the same page numbers in the same document.
