I am having a problem in InDesign CS 5.5. When I open the numbering and section options and change the page number style from 1, 2, 3 to i, ii, iii or any other in the list, the choice does not apply and InDesign simply reverts it back to 1, 2, 3 style. I can create a new section but it will not let me change the style of numbering.

I have deleted my preferences and updated my software but InDesign still refuses to change the page number style.

Does anyone have some idea why this might be happening and how I can fix this? I do a lot of book design so it is important that this feature work so that I am able to change the front matter to roman numerals.

I am on a Mac running OS 10.8.3.

Is this just one document? Or does it happen on a brand new document?
