copying an object or text box when holding down option key

      When I go to copy an object or text box, holding down the option key and dragging, I am now getting two objects, instead of one. The extra box has a dotted line around it. It seemed to happen when I was messing around with “step and repeat” as I was creating a grid pattern (at least I think that’s when it happened). Now I can’t get it to go back to the way it was. How can I get it so that when I go to copy using Option/drag that I just get one object that is copied? ( I am in CS 5.5) Thanks in advance!!!!
