New User decisions to be made

Hi there, I’m a relatively new user of In Design. I have a series of ‘books’ that I want to ‘E’ publish that deal primarily with innovative improvisation techniques for the electric guitar. I have subscribed to Lynda.com and have been watching tutorials etc and in the process have found myself asking a couple of major questions.
Firstly, what is the best way to compile my potential ePub, as a book with separate chapter files or one long document? I’m confused about the appropriate process for what I want to achieve.
Secondly, should I be considering ePub or interactive PDF as the output format ? This is based on a desire to include audio files or possibly video that demonstrates various concepts. To this end I know there are limitations
I have found the tutorials very helpful but since my expertise is founded in music education and not publishing or design I’m wanting some advice on getting it right the first time

      Thanks for any help

      Hi David,

assuming you’re using CS5.5 or later, then it makes little difference if you’re using a Book or a single INDD file. CS5.5 and later have easy to use options (set a paragraph style to cause a split) to break up the epub into chapters so they start at the top of the page.

EPUBs with audio and video can viewed on an iPad using iBooks; other eReaders are a crapshoot and need testing. I do show how to embed a/v in my CS6 > EPUB title at lynda.com.

Other options you might want to consider are PDF ebooks (which you can sell from your site, as we do here), or use iBooks Author, which is only available as authoring software on Macs, and whose books can only be viewed in iBooks for iPads. But it’s pretty cool!

Is your book already written and laid out in InDesign? or Word? elsewhere?

        Hi Anne -Marie

Thanks for the response, its becoming more obvious to me as i get into the program how many decisions need to be made prior to putting it all together so to speak. Im in the process of transferring my ‘written on paper’ ideas into InDesign. I downloaded iBooks Author and that is certainly an option. I guess the other major consideration for me is the file size of the end product. Whilst i want the end result to be interactive im seeing that it could become a huge file so maybe i need to consider have a site where files are downloaded to coincide with the publication rather than have them embedded.

I should have dome design at University

        thanks for your help
