InDesigner: Pratt Institute Grads

Jeff Witchel speaks to three recent graduates and shares samples of their impressive portfolios.

This article appears in Issue 37 of InDesign Magazine.

Brooklyn’s Pratt Institute aims to “educate artists and creative professionals to be responsible contributors to society.” The Pratt Show is an annual juried exhibition of the best work of Pratt Institute’s top graduating design students. I attended the 2010 show and spoke to some of the student exhibitors. This article features the InDesign work of three Pratt students from that show.

At the Pratt Show, this simply designed political ad of Kathleen Kuntz grabbed me from across the room. Her use of the unexpected image, varying sizes and weights of type, and custom kerning and super-tight leading made me read the headline exactly the way she intended.

Daniel Irizarry started his education as a painter but later chose graphic design as his area of study. He loves working with type, and with InDesign’s type capabilities, he can accomplish in minutes what used to take hours. He’s also a big fan of InDesign’s grid-related tools feature. He said, “Grids are the skeletal system of anything and everything to do with design.”

Callie Kant believes that, “Graphic design has proven to be the perfect mix of creative expression and analytical thinking, allowing me to use my strengths for the sake of communication.” While in school, she interned as a web designer at Barneys New York. Her favorite InDesign features are Paragraph and Character Styles, and Master Pages, which speed up the design process while assuring consistency.

Pratt student Kathleen “Katie” Kuntz loves seeing the humor in everything and expressing it through her design. Katie points out InDesign’s Paragraph Styles as a feature she can’t live without. “Paragraph Styles make larger projects far more manageable.” She also mentions InDesign’s kerning as invaluable for those who know and appreciate the craft of type.

I was floored by the concepts, the design, and the high level of professionalism of the students’ work. I think you will be, too.
