I’m laying out a book of poetry. To save some space, I’m not skipping a full line between stanzas, but a half line.

Leading is 13.2, so I put “space Before” 6.6 … but I’m still getting a full line of 13.2 blank space. Why does InDesign seem to be ignoring the request for a 6.6 space (before) and still inserting 13.2 instead?

Do you have Align to Baseline Grid turned on?
Or is it possible that you have Space Before AND space after set to the same amount?

Rich, if David’s tips don’t do the trick, post the file and I’ll take a look. I do this all the time for poetry. Even though some poets insist on a full line of space!

John … Okay … how and where do I post the file?

Compress the file and give me a dropbox (or other) link here?

John, understood that most poets want a full line of space. Unfortunately, THIS poet “layed out” the entire books as he wanted it in Microsoft Word. Not to a correct publishing size, and guess how he separated one poem on one page from another: He didn’t use “page break,” but instead opted to hit the return key a random number of times until it looked “good.” That’s just the first problem :-(

      Very typical in my experience!
