    Hello, I’m trying to create a reference in the Header of the first verse reference using both Chapter and Verse. I’ve been using 2 different Text Variables “looking” for a Character Style for the Chapter Number and another for the Verse Number. And this works great most of the time.

    Example: Romans 4:20

    However, when there’s a chapter break in the middle of the left page, the Chapter Number Text Variable (First Use) pulls the *new chapter number, but the verse on top of the page is associated with the *previous chapter. In other words ID comes up with “Romans 5:20” instead of “Romans 4:20”. I would like to see the correct Chapter number.

    I’ve searched for a solution but haven’t found a great one yet. And with as many Bibles designed / printed I thought it would be something figured out : )

    The best solution I’ve found so far is a non-printing text frame to supply the needed “first use” Chapter Number. But was hoping for something more automatic (the Bible is a BIG book!)

    When i set the Hebrew bible, parallel Hebrew and English, the variables in the headers went: <PARTNAME> | <BOOKNAME> ~ <ENG: Ch#1st> – <ENG: Ch#Last> with the variables pulling “first on page” and “last on page”.

    Thank you Steve. I think that’s what I’m doing – and works unless there’s part of a previous chapter “left over” on the page, so the <Chapter Number> picks up the new Chapter, when I want it to reference the left over Chapter.
    I actually did that for the Luxembourgish New Testament – referenced only the Chapter Numbers (but not the Verse Numbers.) Hope that makes sense – the images on the Adobe Forum may help explain.

    Try one text variable to pull from the paragraph style and the other from a character style…
    I don’t see your images.

    I can use paragraph style (for Chapter Number) but not sure how to incorporate the Chapter Number into that style where it can be picked up but not part of the text.

    Thank you for your reply. Yes, I do think that will work for the numbering, however I would like to keep the text flowing more naturally (as well as fewer page count).
    In my example (Rom 5:20) the (20) is picked up from the (Verse) Character Style, and the first use of that on the page is still from Chapter 4. It’s not a running number list – but just pulls the text that has that Character Style applied to it. The same for Chapter character style – it just pulls what it “sees” (and if it doesn’t see anything, uses what it saw last), not a running number list.
    For my Chapters, the character style is only applied to the “5”.

    No – that’s my reply, lol. Barb’s suggestion is to start a new chapter at the top of a page – which won’t work for me. I don’t think you are understanding what I want to do.

    Unfortunately, InDesign’s headers are just too simple… That’s why Harbs created PowerHeaders (in-tools.com)… but sadly it has been updated in several years and I don’t think it works with any new version of InDesign.

    Thanks David – I’ll have to check them out, but if they don’t work at least it’s good to know and revert to a more manual approach. I appreciate the help!
