I am using InDesign to typeset a Word document that contains a number of charts that appear to have been created in Word but do not import when the text file is placed. On my desktop I changed the file extension from .docx to .zip and expanded the file using UnArchiver. I was expecting to find the charts to be something I could open in Illustrator and then import into InDesign. However, all I found were xml files. Is there any way of getting the charts from Word to InDesign?

I appreciate any suggestions you may have.

      Thank you in advance.

Hm… Perhaps they were drawn using Word’s drawing tools? Maybe select them, copy and paste them into another Word document, and then save the document as a PDF?

what David said ;-) Word-authored artwork doesn’t convert. (Actual tables do, though.) You need to export to PDF then open in Illustrator to grab that art and prep it for commercial printing.
