My company is wanting me to kick our product catalog and other marketing collateral up a level or few. I asked this question on here back in 2016, but it seemed that nothing that was at all “mainstream” seemed to exist. So I am back….in this crazy year of 2020….wondering if anyone has seen any amazing examples of an amazing next-level brochure or catalog.
We currently have a 36 page full color product catalog loaded with all of our products (including spec charts, lots of images, etc.) that was completely revamped in 2017. We also have a lot of 1-2 page flyers. Is there something amazing digitally speaking, that can be done with flyer PDFs these days? Ideally looking for something that can all be done right within InDesign, without the purchase of 3rd party software. Sales collateral is primarily for end-users/customers, so it needs to be EASY to open….ie no special app or software required to open it up. PDF is perfect, as any device can open up a PDF – regardless of device or platform.
Back in 2016, I had looked into ePub and interactive PDFs as potential options. At the time, they just weren’t viable options. I attended PePcon in 2017, but none of the sessions I attended were very helpful (all of them seemed to be extremely complicated!!!).
The SIMPLE answer may be that the world just isn’t quite at the next level yet. :)
In my mind, I think of the amazing book that Penny had in the 90’s cartoon “Inspector Gadget” — that was definitely next level! I think of a PDF where you can push a button to play and pause a video in a PDF.
Like I said, this totally may NOT quite exist yet, but if anyone knew, it would be in these forums!!
      Thank you!

Andrea: Unfortunately, VERY little has changed since 2016… I talked about this, and offered some options, during my PePcon talk (at this year’s CreativePro Week). PDF, in particular, hasn’t budged. Fixed-layout EPUB is pretty awesome, though, as long as people have a reader (all apple devices work great).
