Design Observer Announces Book Design Winners

Online design resource, the Design Observer Group, recently announced the winners of their annual 50 Books/50 Covers competition. The contest—held in conjunction with AIGA and Designers & Books—is a celebration of the art of book design. The competition was open to all books published in 2014 and encompassed book formats as diverse as trade paperbacks, special editions, specialty printing methods, and digital-only publications. Entries could be entered for consideration in the book category, the cover category, or both.

This year, the winning entries—each one having been beautifully photographed—will be compiled into a “book of books,” to be available in October. This catalog of books and covers will be printed by Blurb, with paper donated by Mohawk. The physical books themselves will also travel as an exhibit to AIGA’s National Conference in New Orleans in October, to further showcase the art of book creation. Both Design Observer and AIGA have expressed the desire to expand the reach of the exhibit, but note the expense involved in such an undertaking. To bring this labor of love to life, Design Observer is spearheading a Kickstarter campaign to bring the book and the traveling exhibit to individual AIGA chapters.
