Tables: Is there a faster way to merge cells in a column?

      I have a ton of tables imported from Word that have a bunch of unnecessary cells. I have columns ~50 rows long that have 3 cells that need to be merged per row. It seems like, instead of selecting the 3 cells and merging one row after another, there should be a way to select the entire column and merge cells while retaining the rows. Is there?
