Indesign bug with importing text/styles from Microsoft Word

I’ve run into this issue recently with Indesign that was never a problem before—it is driving me nuts! I design book interiors, and the manuscripts are sent to me as a Microsoft Word document which I import into Indesign in order to retain formatting (bold, italics, headers etc). The problem is that the formatting does not always reflect how the Word document actually looks. Occasionally, if there is one bold word in a paragraph, it will make the whole paragraph bold. Or if there is one little superscript endnote reference number, it will make all the text after that number superscript. There is some bug that applies the formatting to everything that comes after it.

It almost makes it pointless to even retain all the formatting if I have to go back and find every little word that should be bold or italic.

Anyone else have this problem or is it just me? I just did an update to see if anything changes and it didn’t.

I would try doing a Save As from Word (if it’s .doc then try .docx… if it’s .docx then try .doc)

Wow, I never would have thought something so simple would fix it, but that worked! Thank you so much! That saves me so much time!
