I draw a text box. I type … nothing appears except the red “plus” sign at the bottom.

I can’t find any hidden objects or any objects with text wrap. What could be happening to the text?

Something about your text or your default text box settings is making the text not able to fit within the text box you drew. For example, your text may have an indent that is too wide for your text box, or the font is too large for the text to fit within the text box.

If it is the size/settings of the text, you can open Story Editor, highlight all of the overset text and use the Control Panel to reset any indents/spaces/font size, etc.

Or, what I usually do–with Normal mode activated (with anything except the text tool selected, hit W) so that you can see the pasteboard, click on the plus sign at the bottom of the text frame, and then click again on the pasteboard. That will usually create a text box that is large enough to see the previously overset text, and allow you to reformat it so it fits into the text box on your document page.

Take a look at the character and paragraph settings. Or may be the text box is set to add some space inside.

Could be lots of things, here are some:

Check all Layers: Layer Options, you may need to check Suppress Text Wrap When Layer is Hidden.

Object > Text Frame Options > Ignore Text Wrap

Then check the formatting of your text. Could be the type size is too big, also check Character > No Break. Disable any Paragraph and Character Styles. Sometimes I paste text into TextEdit, make Plain Text and copy/paste back into InDesign.

Have you tried doing this in a new document?

When that has happened to me, it was because (for some reason) the type size was too big…and so the text was immediately overset and not visible.

I was experiencing that after I’ve create a new text box in Indesign, like I did in the last 15 years, I could seed the blinking cursor ready to type but when I tried to type nothing happened.

The solution I’ve found for this was to change the default “Minion Pro (OTF)” font from the font option drop down menu and substitute with another font.

I was getting crazy with this problem, I’ve search on the web “Indesign text box not working” “Indesign text box cannot type” “Indesign text box not writable” and many other and couldn’t find a solution.

      Hope it helps

      bye
