I hope someone can help me, but I think that the style of footnotes required for a book I’m working on is beyond InDesign and its automatic footnotes.

      Here is the style:

      • The main text pages are set in 2 columns.
      • The footnotes appear at the bottom of the page in 2 columns.
      • Any headings that appear within the main text span across the 2 columns.
      • The footnotes at the bottom of the page can run over to the next column.

      The two problems:

      (1) If you have, for example, a heading spanning across the columns on a page, and one of the paragraphs above it has a footnote indicator, then InDesign places the footnote above the spanned heading. This book needs all the footnotes to appear at the bottom of the page, no matter how many spanned headings are on the page.

      (2) For this book the footnotes need to be able to appear in either column at the bottom of the page, whether the footnote indicator is in that column or not. This because the book requires the footnotes at the bottom of the page 2 be in equal columns.

Doing this manually is very monotonous. It is a 1,000+ page book with lots of footnotes on every page and the first footnote on each page needs to start at 1. So automation would be fantastic, but I know this is a tall order, but I hope someone out there may have a solution. Help! Oh – and thanks in advance to anyone trying to help me.

      Hi John,

You’d need something like our commercial add-on Footwork to automate such a layout in InDesign: https://www.id-extras.com/products/footwork/
