Thank you, Alan. Such a simple solution but it was frustrating me enormously.

I am using CS6 but, because I am retired and my use of CS6 does not generate any income (I use it mainly to produce material for a church to which I belong) it makes no financial sense for me to commit to a subscription model. I am also worried that, if I let me subscription expire before I expire myself (perhaps because, being a pensioner, I run out of money), I will be unable to open files created by CC.

Now my only concern is that future upgrades of my Mac OS will make use of CS6 impossible. Then, maybe, I WILL expire!

Since I am still using InDesign CS6, I may have misunderstood what has been said already in this thread.

But it occurs to me that a possible solution would be to have a simple 2-cell table that runs the full width of the page. Then build a new table in the left cell and another in the right cell. If the simple 2-cell table had a cell inset of zero (except, perhaps, as outlined in my next paragraph) and a stroke weight of zero, then it would not appear in print (or in a .pdf) and the two additional tables would appear to float within its space.

If you want there to be a “gutter” between the two additional tables, then the cell inset to the right of the left-hand cell and to the left of the right-hand cell could be adjusted to create the necessary gap between the two additional tables.

From having tried it out, I have learned that you have less headaches if you set up ALL the details of the initial table before adding the other two tables. Otherwise you find yourself going back and adjusting things too many times!

I was afraid of that. I will try the one-celled table though I am beginning to suspect I am getting into the territory of overkill.

    Hmmm…

I think I need a little more help. I have anchored a white-filled frame in the right position to cover the vertical rule. The trouble is it also covers the text in the section heading. How can I get the anchored object to go behind the text in which it is anchored?

There’s probably a simple solution but my ageing grey cells haven’t discovered it yet.

Thanks, clever people. I knew you wouldn’t let me down.

Sadly, because I am using CS6, paragraph shading is not available to me, Kelly. No point in my going to a subscription model when (because I am retired) my use of InDesign does not generate an income stream to pay the cost of the subscription.

I think your suggestion of the anchored white frame is the way for me to go, David and Dwayne. It’s a pity it can’t be incorporated into the paragraph style. But if I copy and paste from an existing section heading and then change the wording, I can live with that. It doesn’t occur frequently enough to be irksome.

Sounds to me like you need a separate paragraph style for the first paragraph. It could then have the regular paragraph style as its “next”. You could then apply the nested line style to the first para and have it not apply to the “regular” paragraphs.

It depends on what you want to achieve.

If you use Shift-Return, you are still in the same paragraph with all the same paragraph style features; and the space above the new line will be determined by the font leading. Additionally, if the alignment of the paragraph style is set to justified (of which there are four varieties) then the line you have just left will be expanded to stretch from margin to margin — not a good look. Shift-Return really only works with align-left, align-right, align-centre and align-towards-spine.

If you use Shift on its own then you will be in a new paragraph and, depending on the “Next Style” settings in the paragraph style of the paragraph you have just left, you may be in a completely different paragraph style; and the space above the new line (new paragraph) will be determined by the “Indent and Spacing” settings of the new style. If the space above and below is set to zero and the alignment is left, right, centre or towards-spine, then the new line (new paragraph) will look much the same as a Shift-Return.

Thank you David, Andre (and Steve Werner). I have learned a lot in just a few minutes. I have tried both Steve’s method and Andre’s method and achieved success both times. It’s odd how features can be invisible in plain site — you see them all the time but they somehow never register in your conscioiusness.

    Thank you all three.

From time to time I get asked by parents whether they should buy their child a Mac or a PC. I always reply by telling them to ask themselves which of their friends they can call at 10 (or later) on a Saturday evening when something goes wrong with the computer. Find out what sort of computer that friend has and get one the same. Tech help from a dealer is impossible at that time and their friend with the same machine will probably get them out of trouble with most of the things that go wrong. These days both platforms can do most things, even if one of them does one thing more smoothly than does the other.

Having said all that, your archive does raise a significant issue. I have a friend who has many, many documents written in Publisher and switching to a Mac would be a headache for him. Similarly, as a Mac owner myself (yes, a 27” iMac) I have a number of things on my hard disk that would be difficult if not impossible to access if I changed to a PC. But boy! You sure will discover a whole new world when you move from your Duo to an iMac. Then, just when you come to terms with that, moving from InDesign CS4 to the latest will blow your mind.

Good luck in the argument with your son. I have a nephew who is a computer tech and he is similarly one-eyed. (Not that I am.)

Text wrap is exactly what its name suggests. It will push TEXT aside so that the text wraps around an object. But it won’t push another OBJECT aside (which is what your text block is). The only possible exception I can think of is if a text block is turned into an inline object within other text that will be pushed aside — but that sounds far too complicated for what you are attempting. The table idea sounds much easier to impliment.

Thank you, David. That explained it exactly. I must have hit the key combination Command-Shift-Apostrophe by mistake somewhere along the line.

Why are these entries not in chronological order? Is there a problem with the functioning of the site?

I have never had this experience but can’t help wondering if the problem is not with InDesign but with your operating system. My guess is that for some reason its file recognition algorithms seem to have confused the two file types. Which platform are you on? Is your operating system up to date?
