December 4, 2020 at 8:46 am in reply to: How to turn off style override highlighting in CS6 on document from CC? #14333246
Scott Croft
MemberIt’s very odd, I think it must be something caused by the file being created in CC and saved out as am idml file and then opened in CS6. I’m pretty certain it’s override highlighting as it only appears when I overrride a paragraph or character style.
The highlighting is in two forms, a red vertical block at the side of any affected paragraphs and a rid strikethrough behind any affected text.

MemberThanks guys!!
Claudio, that has worked perfectly thank you.
Xevi, I do need GREP because I have a lot of Capitals in the list that aren’t followed by digits

MemberOMG!!! That is seriously amazing, thank you so, so, so much!! :)
This will make a job which is normally a massive, massive chore into something which will take just a few minutes!
I really must have a look into scripting and see if I can get my head around it because it is clearly a potential huge time saver!
That’s a good point re the indent to here markers, I put those in quickly when I did a find and replace on the raw text I get from the database (which has a symbol instead of tab markers as it can’t export tab markers), Didn’t even occur to me to use indents and first line indents to achieve the same thing, though I have used exactly those in similar situations in the past.

MemberThank you so much for your help and the explanation of how it works, I think I understand it. I would like to get myself more familiar with all the grep stuff as it seems insanely powerful if you know what you’re doing with it!!
The steps for the manual processing will save me a huge amount of time every time I have to put together one of these diaries!! :)

MemberHi All
Thanks for the help, I posted the thread then was off ill for a couple of days then on holiday and forgot all about it. I’m back at work now and have given both methods a try. The script doesn’t seem to do anything? I’ve put it into my script folder and tried running it but nothing happens? Am I doing something wrong?
Kai: the manual method works perfectly thank you!! It will save me so much time next time I put one of these diaries together! Might you be able to explain what each of the find bits are actually doing/ looking for as I don’t really understand it and I would like to get my head round it so in future I might have a bit more of a clue.
Also, a bit cheeky, but is there also a way to use a find/change to find where I have the week numbers next to the Monday entries to make them the correct character style (week number) but to also have it change for the number that follows the word week?
Thanks again.

MemberJust put together an example file from the one I’ve been working on, had to remove sensitive details etc so it will look a little odd where Ive split things across pages but it works with the full version of the text. :)
I’ve dropped the text into a text box and set to default text for the ‘before’ text.
Here is the file google drive (hopefully the link will work)

Any help would be hugely appreciated!!

MemberI’m open to that..though Again it’s not something I’ve used before so any tips on how to achieve it would be most welcome! :)

MemberNope, it’s purely for printed hard copy.
Although having said that I might actually investigate it being a pdf form too, would look good if I go back to the powers that be and tell there is extra functionality…

MemberI've just put together a test file with four lines a,, drawn using the Line Tool and set to a stroke width of 2pt, then set to dotted, Japanese Dotted, Dash ( 3 and 2) and Dash (4 and 4)
The dashed lines printed out as they should, both dotted lines printed one dot, then a solid line then a final dot at the end.
Exporting a pdf, gives me perfect dotted lines on screen and when printed…also perfect dotted lines!

MemberI take it no one else has had this problem then?
I'm still suffering with this problem, which is annoying as there are occassions when I need to print things in house and they will have dotted lines and at present this is not possible.
If anyone has any ideas as to how to sort this out I'd love to hear them!!
Scott Croft
MemberIt's not just me suffering from this then!! I'm on Vista and fairly recently install CS5, it's not the biggest problem in the world but as you say, when you're used to the ease and speed of it, it is aggravating!

MemberJust been having a play and it seems that you have to make sure no text wrap is set for the frame when you are trying to change the shape, otherwise you just end up changing the shape of the text wrap/outset frame…
July 4, 2012 at 5:51 am in reply to: Why can't Character Styles be based on Paragraph styles? #62547Scott Croft
MemberHaving had a bit more of a play with the character styles I can see now that I can merely specify that text should be 'bold' in the character styles sxetup, I thought I had to choose the font etc as well.
This makes life a little easier, though I still think it could be useful to allow character styles to be based on paragraph styles too.

MemberThanks for your reply, I did some reading up on the paragraph and singfle line composer after reading your post and I think I now understand exactly what was going on and it makes much more sense now. Having come from a version of quark which was about 12 years old, it's clear that things have changed hugely in the world of text setting and design etc since that software was made.
I have to say, having had a bit of a play with chunks of text, the paragraph composer does indeed do a good job but it is also useful to know that in times when I have to really squeeze to get text to fit into a space I can still have the fine and total control over it using the single line composer.
With regard to the amounts of tracking I use, well I tend to use as little as possible, the examples I posted yesterday were just extremes to show how much space there was for a single word to fit into without it deciding to move.
Having done this job for as many years as I have, I have a pretty good eye for where I can give a line a bit of a squeeze to get something to fit or not, and I just new that the 'for' should easily be able to fit in the gap I wanted it to move to. When I gave it a try with the single line composer I was right and it only took a -5 tracking to get it to do so.
I have to say I'm really enjoying using InDesign, despite it being so much more complicated in places than the software I've been using for years, it is lovely to work with and some of the features are just hugely useful – smart guides for example is a complete god send!!!

MemberI should probably expand on my post really, when I say I put it together as one docuemtn, what I mean is, the final piece goes as one document, while I'm putting it together I have separate files for each section, and then when it's 99% finished I compile it all into one document, would that work ok with InDesign too?
