I was just in the same predicament with lengthy footnotes and the dreaded split footnote rule. MANY thanks! Peter Kahrel’s InDesign scripts have also been of immense value.
SOOO glad that I found these scripts as I had the same problem with importing endnotes into ID cc2018. And yes, the new live function endnotes in ID is almost useless. And will love to use the Notes running head as one client uses that in all of their books. Many thanks Peter!
This has been happening to me too and driving me nuts. I accidently figured it out today.
I placed a Word file into ID and it had those pesky squares in the story editor. The file had a table with the text – once I removed the table, the squares disappeared! Oddly, when I copied the text into a new ID file, the squares were not there. But when I copied back into the original file, they appeared again.
I also exported to an IDML file to see if my ID file was corrupt but that didn’t solve the problem.
