MemberDavid: Yes, it continues to happen no matter how many times I delete the pages and start over.
However, someone in the Facebook group took a look at my file and experienced the same strangeness. However, he was able to get it to work correctly enabling “Smart Text Reflow” in Preferences and then recreating the document. I haven’t checked today, but I am pretty sure I have that option toggled to “off,” which makes me think that this is really a bug. Once I confirm my preference settings, I plan on posting a report via Uservoice.
Katherine: I think my response might actually lead to a solution to your problem.
1. Make sure that you have designated a text box as a Primary Text Frame on your master page, and that all of the remaining text boxes on those pages are set up to thread the way you would like them to.
2. Go into your Preferences settings and enable Smart Text Reflow (under the Type tab).
3. Now click on the outflow icon in your last filled text box, and flow the text into your next text box. InDesign should now create as many pages as it needs to contain all of your text.
BTW: If you scroll all the way to the bottom of the main forum page, there is a place to start a new topic.

MemberYes, it continues to happen. Someone on the Facebook page took a look at the document and it did the same thing to him, but he was able to get a working version by recreating my document after setting “Smart Text Reflow” in his preferences.
I was actually surprised when InDesign automatically added the pages, as I thought I had toggled that particular setting to “off” in my preferences, but I forgot about that strangeness almost immediately, and got busy today and still haven’t checked.
Assuming I don’t have smart text reflow enabled, I believe it must be a bug, and I will submit a report via Uservoice.

MemberWhew…okay…so OP here. I actually received some help from someone on the Facebook page. I sent him a link to my file, and it caused the same trouble for him. He enabled “Smart Text Reflow” and recreated my file, which then worked correctly. I have Smart Text Reflow enabled in my Preferences, but I am going to try to follow the steps he took and see if I can make this work for me.
However, I am beginning to think that this may actually be a bug, so if I continue to have difficulty, I will post to Uservoice.
BTW…Kathleen, I don’t mind at all that you jumped in on this topic–the title of the post will work for anyone who is looking for information about text thread issues, so that is good. However, for future reference, you can start a new topic by scrolling all the way to the bottom of the main page. :-)

MemberI have actually typed two replies to this topic now, and they haven’t been added to the thread. Just testing to see if this one reply will be added.

MemberSomething about your text or your default text box settings is making the text not able to fit within the text box you drew. For example, your text may have an indent that is too wide for your text box, or the font is too large for the text to fit within the text box.
If it is the size/settings of the text, you can open Story Editor, highlight all of the overset text and use the Control Panel to reset any indents/spaces/font size, etc.
Or, what I usually do–with Normal mode activated (with anything except the text tool selected, hit W) so that you can see the pasteboard, click on the plus sign at the bottom of the text frame, and then click again on the pasteboard. That will usually create a text box that is large enough to see the previously overset text, and allow you to reformat it so it fits into the text box on your document page.

January 14, 2019 at 6:01 pm in reply to: Master Page Items Re-Appear After Merging Two Files! #113582Melise Gerber
MemberI run into the same issue frequently–if you have to override master page items to enter information onto a document page, when the master page definition is updated (as it will be when you move pages to a different document), it will place the overridden items back onto that page. The only solution that I have found (and it is only a partial solution) is to use threaded primary text frames as much as you can on your master pages. When you place text into a primary text frame on a document page, InDesign doesn’t treat them as if they have been overridden, and they will remain in place when you move the pages back to the previous document.
In situations where that is not possible, I try to put all of the edits on a single layer in my file–a different layer than the one holding the master page items. Then when I have to remove the newly “re-added” master page items, I can lock the layer that has the correct information, then override and delete all of the erroneous master page items.
Not really a solution, but some workarounds that I have used successfully when facing the same situation.

MemberYep…it is definitely enabled in the style.

MemberI just read this in the InDesign Tip of the Week, and my mind is BLOWN…I rely heavily on styles and have lots of folders and subfolders, but even so, the number of styles I have in a folder can be a bit overwhelming. So, not only does this save me having to set the last line of any list in a different style, it makes using my styles easier. Double win! Thanks SO much Obi-Wan Kenobi.

MemberThis worked like a charm. Thanks!

MemberYour second image matches the options I have in my paragraph style options window. If you are seeing the first set of options, I think it is time to reset your preferences and see if that solves your problem.
I also just wanted to share that I got really confused looking at your first example. I know enough French that it didn’t immediately jump out at me that your style names were in a different language, but once I realized it, my brain kept going back and forth trying to figure out how you could be using a version of InDesign that used both French and English. :-)

MemberI just installed your script and it works beautifully. I really want to thank you in particular for including the information about which elements to change to tweak the options–I copied the script and installed a tweaked version which creates a PDF and saves each individual page without packaging the fonts or links. That is really what I need to do, so this is a double thumbs up from me.

MemberJust curious if anyone else has seen sluggishness since they installed the upgrade? It seems to happen most when I try and move an object–an image, a shape, etc. I did a quick search on the Adobe site, and found nothing. If I don’t hear anyone else complaining about funkiness from the upgrade then I will trash and rebuild my Preferences and hope that fixes things.

MemberBelieve it or not, I hadn’t tried that order yet–but I just tested it, and I got 11 on the left side with 18 on the right side, and 19 on the left side with 10 on the right side–so exactly flipped the opposite of what they should be.
Besides that, I have tried 11,18,10,19 and 18,11,10,19. I didn’t keep track of how each of those printed, but they were not correct. I also tried just printing 11,18 by itself, and 10,19 by itself. Both of those ended up with a half blank sheet–so, for example, page 18 was printed on the right side of an 11×17 sheet, and the left side was blank, and page 11 was printed on the left side of a separate 11×17 sheet and the right side was blank.
