Thanks for the suggestions, basically I have solved this with an inline graphic that is just a drawn line with a hard return all other returns are hard returns so all the extra space goes with the inline graphic. It just requires a couple of extra steps to complete involving some find and replace scripts.
Yes I saw that in the CC version but nothing for CS6 which we are running at a large company. Just looking for something like the very old Adobe Type Reunion did to the font menu.

Found in preference in ALS import that allows us to specify how the pdf’s are imported.
Sometimes the answer is right in front of us but hard to see, problem solved.
Regardless Adobe needs to make that a general preference.

David I wish that was the case however it seems the ALS layout file we are
importing with paths to the ads we need does not in fact use that setting
although I imported a pdf using that setting. Whenever I physically import a pdf it does in fact hold the setting I need.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated
