  • in reply to: Script to insert grep style in all Paragraph styles #60848

Kasyan, I get an error when saving the above script as jsx – it says that the script contains Unicode information & should not be saved as ANSI.

Regarding Query 1 , the Figure numbers refer to the captions of placed graphics such as (Figure 2.1), (Figure 2.2) & so on

Thanks, Jongware & Eugene for replying. I now realize what you are hinting at. Deleting the swatch in the swatch panel & replacing it looks like the best option. I never thought that this could somehow change the swatch in all the styles. A very simple solution indeed.

Thanks for replying. The problem with the first alternative is that all the styles(about 50-60 of them) are already prepared. So to change their master style would be difficult as they may not all be based on the same master style.

in reply to: Script to insert grep style in all Paragraph styles #60821

I work with Indesign CS4 on a Windows machine. I would like to change the font colour of the text (Figure No : *) wherever it appears in the text. I thought that the best way to do this would be by a Grep style. Am I right?. We can do this via Find/Change, but I wanted to insert a grep style in all my Paragraph styles (there are about 50 of them) so that the colour of the above text in Parantheses changes automatically whenever I make changes to the book.

Ragarding the second query, I have a few Paragraph styles where the text colour of the font is a swatch C60, M40, Y0, K0. I want to change this in all those Paragraph styles to Swatch C15, M100, Y100, K0 (which already exists in the document). Can we script it.

Kasyan, thanks, but one query. Do I need to make changes to the script above so that it includes the name of the character style I want in the Grep style.

Also, can we construct a script similar to the above one which can change the font color of text in all the styles / style groups.

in reply to: Is bleed required in all cases #60089

Before exporting to PDF, should all Printers marks be included, only the crop marks (provided bleed is not required) should be included, or should the printer guide us as to the marks required.

Thanks David. The blog post you mentioned outlines the problem accurately. Hope Adobe come up with a way to prevent the local formatting from getting sucked up in the TOC. Maybe in ID CS6.

Thanks all of you. Honestly, this is the best blog & forum as far as Indesign is concerned. There is hardly anything that is not discussed & there is usually a solution for any kind of problem (barring hardware-of course). One more thing, before exporting to PDF, should you include all Printers marks, only the crop marks (provided bleed is not required), or should the printer guide us as to the marks required.

in reply to: Image degradation on resaving from PSD to JPEG #59314

    Hi Alan,

I do not doubt your experience, but since the export-to-PDF function in Indesign has only bicubic downsampling as against bicubic sharper in Photoshop, would it make any diffence when scaling down images shot by digital cameras at high resolution (>8 MP) to print at 2-3 inches in size. Wouldnt the images be less sharper if they arent resized & downsampled in Photoshop.

I also tried to do a sort of a trial. I did a Save as & I saved a single image as both JPEG & PSD. placed about 30 JPEG images in 1 Indesign document & 30 PSD images in another Indesign document. Though each PSD was on an average 1.2 MB bigger than the corresponding JPEG image, the final size of the exported PDF of PSD-containing images was only 1.6 MB larger than the exported PDF of JPEG-containing images. So, PSD definitely scores over JPEG.

Using JPEG instead of PSD is just to save space as JPEG files are less bulky as compared to PSD.Would there be a difference in the size of exported PDF on using PSD miage files as compared to JPEG image files

in reply to: Image degradation on resaving from PSD to JPEG #59263

I think i will make myself clear. I frequently get digital images which are too large (pixel-size). Hence, I need to crop, retouch the images & reduce the image size in Photoshop before placing in Indesign. I save the image as JPEG & place it in an Indesign document. Now sometimes the same image is to be reused, but its size needs to be further reduced according to the format. What I want to know is that should I first save the retouched image as PSD, so that while placing multiple times in Indesign in varying sizes, I can do a Save As in JPEG form the second or third time or should I use the original every time, do the changes in Photoshop, get the final size & save as JPEG. Would saving as PSD after making changes to the original image in Photoshop the first time & then later on saving as JPEG the second time cause image degradation.

in reply to: script to change size of graphics #58087

Scalegraphics script helps to scale the graphics by percentages, but can we scale graphics to an absolute size in mms, cms or inches

in reply to: necessity of downsizing images before placing #57737

The intended output is indeed print – its going to be printed via sheetfed offset on coated paper. The reason for my asking whether to save in JPEG vs PSD was that saving in PSD format results in a much bigger file size when compared to saving in JPEG. It hardly matters nowadays, but still reducing the file size results in faster InDesign response

in reply to: script to insert glyph using GID number #56015

Looks like it would be more prudent to set keyboard shortcuts to most recent glyphs to use glyphs rather than go through find/change routine. I was just wondering if a script could simplify this procedure
