I’ve looked at EasyCatalog, and it looks promising. I am thinking about using their free trial to test it and see how much it helps, but it looks like it may be overkill for my purposes.
You also mentioned using data merge, then using a script to create the links. That is what I am already planning to do/doing to link all the ordinary URLs in each entry, but I can’t figure out how to craft a script that would take the Facebook and twitter URLs as input, and result in just a single glyph in a different font as output. I have no experience with creating code, and have tried in vain to find something like this elsewhere.
