There seem to be a few bugs with cc 2017. When I try to use Section and Numbering options they don’t show up on my pages panel, and when I backsave to idml for colleagues still on CS6 the text variables I am using as page headers seem to reapply themselves and can’t be over-ridden. Would go back to 2016 version if I could.

I am also looking into the prospect of XML workflow in publishing but finding it hard to find case studies or reports that explain this at a basic level.
We publish books (printed) and send the indd file out to be converted to ebook. The text comes in as a styled Word file, so all the formatting translates to indd ok but I’d like to be able to extract that and reuse on the website, or for epubs, catalogues or any other format.
The problem for me is where to start – if anyone has any pointers I’d be grateful.

    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for all the suggestions, sadly none of them worked for me (apart from Distiller), HOWEVER a colleage deleted a set of master pages that weren't being used, and lo – nothing moved on the pdf!. Trying this with a few other docs to see if is a fix.

OK have ditched prefs and also saved as idml but still the same problem.

I opened the idml in CS4 too just to see, and it pdf'd fine, just goes wrong in CS5. Will keep trying…

    Hi David.

The elements don't move when I use pdf/x4, and I thought that was the answer but our printers require pdf/x1a as any other settings override the flattener presets and we get issues with transparencies. I have a team using 13 different macs and it seems to affect all of them. The documents were all templates created in CS4 where the pdf worked fine, but re-creating them in CS5 hasn't helped. I haven't rebuilt the prefs yet though, so I will see if that makes a difference. The only other way round it that I have found is to put the job through distiller.

Ah, I feared this may be the case.

We had no problem in CS4 – black only documents produced black only pdfs (the Black swatch in CS4 showed black plate only).

I am finding a few annoying issues with CS5 regarding pdfs – text reflow, images bitmapping etc, so will be keen to move up to CS6 asap.

    Thanks for the reply.
