    Matthew,

You can apply a character style to page numbers and leaders within the table of contents style (Layout > Table of Contents Style..). This can be done separately for each TOC entry. Are you using an automated table of contents or were you creating it manually?

Your expression would still prove useful if you included section markers within your page numbers and you wanted to style the letters and numbers differently (e.g., A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, B3).

    Furry,

There have been several posts that have gone missing in the last fews days. In most cases, the OP checked for answers and responded positively before the thread was lost. however, I did respond to one or two that were immediately lost.

Someone did answer your post. I believe it was Gert. (Scratch that… it was Bob)

In case he does not see your repost, the answer is:
    1. Close all InDesign documents.
    2. Go to View > Structure > Hide Structure

Now when you create a new document, the default will be to keep it hidden.

There are other useful defaults that you can set. For example, if you like to have certain color swatches in all of your document (company colors etc), you can create them with no documents open. All new document will have these swatches automatically added to each new document.

    Aysha,

You need to look for margin settings in Layout > Margins and Columns.

    Tina,

That is interesting. I tried to duplicate this in one of my projects without success.

If it is creating links for index references in multiple InDesign documents, we know your settings are correctly handling the book.

I have never had a bad index issue. However, I have had issues with bad bookmarks. It is typically an issue with not being up-to-date. I have had strange behavior with TOCs where recreating TOC style, creating a new frame did not do the trick, and running it out as an IDML did not do the trick. I had to trash the entire InDesign file and recreate it. It was very unusual.

If you select one of the problem indexes within the InDesign index pallet and select go to selected market icon at the bottom right, does it take you to the correct page or the cover?

Can you clarify the problem entries?
    – Do they link to the wrong page?
    – Do they appear as a link (i.e., your cursor changes)?
    – Are they plain text?

You do not need to export as an interactive PDF. You need only select Hyperlinks within the export options.

    Teri,

In your first paragraph, you describe an issue with linked media that is modified and in your first question you talk about an issue with linked media location.

Your source control solution is likely modifying the linked media’s timestamp. InDesign sees a “new version” based upon the time stamp and provides you with a warning. You may want to look into options to preserve file timestamps.

    Answer 1
InDesign looks for linked media in the following three locations and order:
    1. In the last location the media was linked
    2. In the “Links” folder with the InDesign file
    3. in any subfolder of the folder containing the
There is a preference under File Handling called “Default Relink Folder”. You can choose from:
Most Recent Relink Folder – This is the default.
Original Link Folder – This looks in the original location from when the link was placed. I have not checked; however, I don’t believe that InDesign will still more than one link location. It is likely that it would be dependent on the current setting at the time the file was produced (i.e., you may not be able to select this option and then expect it to find the original location of the file.)

    Answer 2
As I mentioned above. It is likely an issue with how your source control handles file timestamp. Look for options on how Perforce stores files. You may find an option to preserve file timestamps. This would likely correct your issue.

    Answer 3
I would look into the fixing the issue through timestamp preservation. My workflow generally contains unique file names. If you do not believe that similar but different content will ever share the same filename, updating shouldn’t be an issue. You can update all of them at once through the links panel.

Depending on the situation, I use both linked and embedded solutions for collaborative environments. In deadline driven environments where every minute counts, I prefer linked documents and the use of InDesign books to break up sections. In less time-sensative projects, I go with embedded. As you know, a large InDesign document with embedded media can be sizable. If I have someone update even some minor text within a large document, I then have to wait for the entire document to sync back to the cloud and eventually back down to my machine. Keeping clean InDesign documents, breaking sections into separate InDesign documents using the books pallet, and linked media ensures a lightweight.

Again, preservation of file timesstamps should be your first choice. Let us know if that works or what your solution is.

    Apostropher,

This is an interesting issue. I have experienced similar issues and it typically came from multiple versions of the same font. It appeared that some names had changed slightly. It was a big headache.

Is there a “Document fonts” folder with your source documents? If so, you may have a different version of the font or simply one that has been named differently. If so, you can simply drop this in the “Document fonts” folder of your destination InDesign file.

If this is not the case, im not sure what the issue is. It will be likely that you will need to set up your styles in the new document, preferably not using [Basic Paragraph], and then paste the source text without formatting (Edit > Paste without formatting). Else, replace the font each time through the find font dialog.

You can also try removing the adobe font caches. Personally, I have never had issues with this and neither has anything else I have spoken to. This article speaks to it. https://creativepro.com/fix-font-problems-correctly.php

You can use tiikoni.com or similar and provide the link.

    Pantsbike,

I know this is an older post.

As long as you do not have a conflict with two separate files having the same name, you can dump all of the links into a single links folder and all of the InDesign files into the parent folder and you should not have any issues.

In regard to the different versions, you should consider a script that opens, saves, and closes the documents. An applescript or shell script should do the trick. If you do decided to explore these options, consider that missing fonts, links, and etc., may halt this type of automations.

Is there a reason that you want to up-save these documents? Are you trying to incorporate them into am InDesign Book?

    Jack,

Which version of InDesign and which OS are you using?

Do they function properly on under accounts?

    Stephen,

I have not come across this in my workflow; however, you can try the following if a more direct solution does not present itself.

For a quick fix, my first thought would be to try placing a folder titled “Document fonts” in the same folder as the InDesign document and then adding the AntennaCond Regular font to this folder. I believe fonts placed within the Document fonts folder will override system fonts.

Is the script handling the creation of a new InDesign document as well? If so, you may need to ensure that the document is saved prior to importing the text. You could even add the process of setting up the Document fonts folder to your applescript.

    In addition:
In lieu of using the [basic paragraph] style, I have been setting up my documents using a custom default. For example, I use a defaults, defaults – paragraphs, and defaults – headings as the foundation. This has solved several issues when working in a collaborative environment and diverse documents.

    Clair,

    The grep was slightly different.
    (?!(Assistant|Chief)))(?=(\u\w+ \u\w+))(\u\w+ \u\w+)

It was Jongware’s initial expression with the addition of a positive lookahead.

Jongware’s is saying, look for an instance of two capitalized words in a row that do not include “Assistant” or “Chief”.

Mine would be a second Grep Style that says, look for an instance of two capitalized words only when there are two capitalized words preceding it and they don’t include “Assistant” or “Chief”. It no-breaks just the names.

Setting to “No Language” in Jongware’s original expression is a fantastic idea. That is why I love these forums. I am always learning a new trick.

    Clair,

    I was going to say

    (?!(Assistant|Chief)))(?=(\u\w+ \u\w+))(\u\w+ \u\w+)

With an associated character style of no-break

Your method is far simpler. I like it!

If the document is to be read digitally, I would consider the flexibility of dynamic endnotes. A reader would be able to click the reference and go straight to the note.

You may save some time if you add Excel to the workflow.

    1. Paste all of the endnotes into column A of a new excel document.

    2. Add the following function to column B
    =LEFT(A1, SEARCH(” “,A1)-1)

    3. Add the following function to column C
    =RIGHT(A1, LEN(A1) – SEARCH(” “,A1))

You now have the numbers and notes in separate cells similar to your InDesign layout and can cut and paste. Should save the time it would take to manually type the numbers and remove them from the notes column.

    Good luck on your project.
