    Hi Nada,

Try using Epub 3. That converted well for me.

    Good luck,

Do you want to add music or do you want the characters to speak to each other. I can walk you through either. Please email me at janisf11@gmail.com and I will be happy to help.

    Hi Paul,

I went through the same thing. The answer is no. The only way you can publish an EPub on Itunes is with a Mac Computer.
You can’t use a pc, ipad, or iPhone. You must use IBook Producer (download it free from the MAC app store). You can only download it on to a Mac with 10.1 operating system or better.

Also Apple won’t let you advertise your ePub as an Ibook. It only considers an ebook written with IBook Author as an IBook. I bought a used
mac just for uploading ePubs to IBooks.

    Hope this helps,

    Janis

in reply to: ePub doesn't play music after page turn #89820

So did you solve the problem. I looked back at the eBook I formatted and I didn’t include music. I did include it in the book trailer video.
I think it would be a nice touch to have some soft music in the background as the words are read. Let me know.

    Thanks,

    Janis

I did this for one of my client’s eBooks. Each word is highlighted as it is spoken by a voice actor. You should be able to do this with music as well. On apple the pages turn and the dialog starts again. You have to set up an smil files to do this. It has to be included in the xhtml and elsewhere in the programming. If you send me an email, I will give you all the information you need. I will need to send you a attachment.

    Hi Tim,

I have a fixed-layout read-along with highlighting children’s book the I formatted for a client. It took me a year to
learn how and do it! It works great on the iPad. I would like to let you use it for a case study, but it is copyrighted.
You can use it to learn how to do it, but you can’t give it out to anyone or use it for yourself. Please send me an email pfriesler@wi.rr.com that you agree to these terms and I will send it to you through iUniverse because the file is large.

Since you have a lot of images, think about fixed layout ePub. Ann Marie has a course about this on Linda.com that is very good. I think fixed-layout with a lot is a lot easier to create than reflowable formatting.

    Hi Steve,

Send it to me and I will try to figure it out. I have done a lot of these and it shouldn’t be a problem. I will try my best. You can send it using wetransfer.com if the file is too large for your email. My email address is pfriesler@wi.rr.com. I can run it through my epub pack. I have a pc and a mac because I format so many books.

    Hope I can help you,

    Janis

    Hi Steve, epub

My guess is Smashwords algorithm doesn’t work with fixed-layout. I don’t use Smashwords anymore because it does not recognize more complex layouts. My suggestion is to download a free program called Epub Checker: https://www.pagina-online.de/produkte/epub-checker and a program called Epub Pack:https://sourceforge.net/projects/epubpack/. Here is what I do:

    1. I rename my ePub file from whatevername.epub tp whatevername.html
    .
    2. I run epubpack. Click on the button next to the upper field called mimetype. It will open a search. find whatever.html open it and it will have the mimetype file. Click on it and it will fill in the mimetype field then click on the bottom button. It will take you to another screen so save the file as whatevername2; it will save as an epub again. You have to do this process so the mumetype file comes first in the list of the epub parts. That is a requirement.

    3. The next step is to open the epubchecher/
cker. Drag whatevername.epub on the the open eubchecker and run it. It will give you any errors if you have them. Correct the errors in a html editor like Sigl. Do this until epubcheck validates the whole thing.

    4. Then try to upload it to Smashwords:

“The Smashwords Direct feature allows you to upload your own professionally designed .epub file to Smashwords. You can use Smashwords Direct to replace a Smashwords-generated .epub with your own EPUB file, or you can use it when uploading a new title (simply upload the EPUB rather than an MS Word DOC file). We support direct upload of both EPUB2 and EPUB3 files.
I usually post my ePub fixed-layout directly to iTunes, but I have a Mac. The only way to do this is by using iTunes Producer. I free program available for the Mac only.

    Hope this all helps.

in reply to: Epubs optimized for specific devices #84487

iBooks need a special code in the heading section. Other epub sites do not. I am not sure if they differ. Of course, Kindle needs the epubs converted to mobi. Also fixed-layout requires Comic Book Creator. Textbook Creator only accepts pdfs. if you want to know exactly what she meant, just ask her here. She is very good about responding to questions.

    Hope this helps,

    Janis

in reply to: MOBI animation #81967

I don’t think you can export it as a Mobi. I exported as an epub and then converted it to mobi using Kindle previewer. If you want to animate a mobi, you have to use Amazon’s special programs.
I used Textbook Creator to export for audio, and I think you have to use either the children’s book creator or the comic book creator to add animations.

You really should call Amazon’s publishing department. They can tell you which is the best program to use.

The plugin does not work very well, but it is worth a try.

    Good Luck,

in reply to: InDesign CS3 and Kindle #77930

I don’t think so. I think CS6 was the first to have the export for Epub. I signed up for the Adobe Creative Cloud for $25 a month. You get all the applications. I used Dreamweaver and Photoshop as well for resizing images and adjusting the html code. I converted an Indesign print book to an Epub3 very easily by exporting it. It validated right away and it looked fantastic on Readium and when I tested it on the iPad. You also can convert the Epub to Kindle with some tweaking.

    Hope this helps,

    Janis

in reply to: highlighting is not working in my read -along-book #75179

I had InDesign CC convert the book first from print to ePub 3. The eBook validated right away and look perfect in iBooks. Then I went into the code and added the coding for the words. This is the exact structure for every word:

    <p class=”ParaOverride-1″><span id=”W1″ class=”CharOverride-5″ style=”position:absolute;top:-0.01px;left:3110.48px;letter-spacing:-50.33px;”>the</span>

I added <span id=”W1″ and >the</span> Indesign did the rest.

The things I am not sure of are:

1, Did I put the media overlay in the wrong spot in the CSS. I put the code at the top. I also put it in the manifest. Should I put it as Css on each page? InDesign created a generated CSS for the whole book in one file.

    2. The audio in the book starts on page 5 because there is information in the preface for the parents not for the children.

    3. I did start some of the lines in the audio separately because I was afraid the highlighting would look weird when it moved from the last line to the new line. Should I go back and number line and attach each word to the next?

I know these are a lot of questions, but I have put in so much work into this book. I coded over 700 words in the audio files, xhtml, and smil. It took me a long time to learn InDesign and to convert the book and then the audio. I took me three weeks to fix all the validation errors. I have become an expert on that. Now it is the highlighting. I did buy both of your mini-guides (fixed-layout and Read-along) and “Epub Straight to the Point”. So if you can help me, I would be so grateful that I will put your books on my website and link them to Amazon without an affiliate fee and write a blog about my experience lauding your books.

    Thanks for any help,
