MemberJongware,
Thnks a lot. Works fine. I’m going to try to make it work with the grep query manager, so we can automate it a bit more.
A shame the variable length doesn’t work.Gert Verrept
MemberIndeed, after a little test, this seems to work:
First, create a character style with as “basic character format” only filled in size=0.1 pt and give it a name.
In the field leave the double em and put in the change field a “normal blank”.
In the “change format” put your paragraph style and your newly created char style.
This way, the double em is replaced by a blank with a length of 0.1 point.Gert Verrept
MemberPut in the fiend field the double em space, leave the change field blank, below you see two boxes (find format and change format), the top one is for the find field, so leave it blank, the second one (change format) will let you add the para style needed, so fill in the para style by clicking on the “T” at the right top side.

MemberThis one works for me, first nested style green quotation mark through 1 ‘ — second nested style green quote text up to 1 ‘ (the second quote) — third nested style, again the green quotation mark through 1 ‘ (the second quote). If you put a “shift-enter” after the second quotation mark, you can add the last nested style for the credit

MemberThe distiller option is still valid, but as you say, “old school technology”. With the correct settings exporting to pdf directly is a better and “newer” solution. However the file size depends on the extra settings for the pdf-export too. When you export a full color pdf with the SheetCMYK 1V4 (standard) settings, a some Mbs get added to the file. The more measures are made to make up the settings, the bigger the file becomes.
Because quality input is needed to get quality output, the file size is, for me, less important.
Some good sites for standard values are certainly: VIGC.ORG; ECI.ORG; GWG.ORGGert Verrept
MemberWhat format are the photo’s in? Tiff, jpg, pdf, ?? If they would be in pdf format, use the “multipageimporter”, to be found over here:
https://creativepro.com/zanelli-releases-multipageimporter-for-importing-both-pdf-and-indd-files.php. This will give you one page with one photo. For several photos on the same page, use data merge.
https://creativepro.com/article/indesign-how-designing-data
gives you a good idea of what is possible.Gert Verrept
MemberAs you pointed out, the pdf/x-1 “looks” right, and it is right, but if you would try to select objects in the pdf, you’ll notice that if you move a “transparency” figure, it is composed of lots of little objects. If you do them same with a pdf/x-4 the “transparency object” will still be one object.
Also, the settings are different. Look in the “advanced” tab of the pdf-presets and you’ll find an option “transparency flattener”, which is grayed out in pdf/x-4 and not in the pdf/x-1.
For the best flattener presets for CMYK check: https://www.digital-engineer.net/archive/entry/indesigns-hidden-transparancy-flatteners/
and look for “gwg2400”.
So, it’s not the pdf which can cause trouble, but the way it’s made. Old rips don’t support pdf/x-4, so a pdf/x-1 is needed, and flattening will be needed. If it’s a complex design, it can mean trouble, but not always.
Hope this helps a bit more.Gert Verrept
MemberLars,
Depending on the version on pdf/x more or less “options” are allowed. A pdf/x-4 allows “transparency”, all the other versions do not. This means that if you make for example a drop shadow, only the pdf/x-4 will render it correctly without flattening. Pdf/x-1 has no such thing. All kinds of transparency will be flattened, causing some problems when printing a complex design.
This site: https://www.vigc.org/ will help you find the right settings and even more, it has a fantastic tool called https://www.vigc.org/vigc-output-essentials/ which is in fact a “plugin” for Indesign or photoshop. It will help you to get a good pdf out and to set up a good indesign file. Their life preflight profiles are good too.
This site: Ghent PDF Workgroup (www.gwg.org) will give you all the possible settings for a good pdf. Depending on what you want to print, settings can or have to be changed.
The RGB – CMYK question then. Every one has his own idea about it. When you print, it’ll always be CMYK. If the image has a profile with it, use it. If an image comes without a profile, I’ll be a wild guess how it will look printed.
Using a preset is not bulletproof, but the chances are that it comes out ok. If you printer has a good and recent “rip”, using a pdf/x-4 is no problem (check the vigc site fora summary of all rips supporting pdf/x-4).February 27, 2013 at 11:15 pm in reply to: Tables : Alternate Fills that match over multiple frames – any ideas? #64299Gert Verrept
MemberYou could try “smartstyles” from Woodwing. You can test it for 30 days. Works just fine and is easy to learn.

MemberD,
If you have acrobat, use the preflight profiles to the pdf BEFORE placing them. That way you can ask the clients to adapt the pdf is needed.
In Indesign, you can preflight the document too.
Check this site, which has some interesting stuff for checking things:
https://www.vigc.org/vigc-outpu…..ssentials/
https://www.vigc.org/standard-p…..-profiles/ (to be used in indesign)

MemberSplendid, works just fine.
Thnkx a million, we just changed “0” in 0 in the following lines:
try{numsellines.text = String(doc.selection[0].lines.length);}catch(e){numsellines.text = 0;}
…
try{var numoflines = String(doc.selection[0].lines.length);}catch(e){var numoflines = 0;}

MemberThnkx,
I'll give a try and let you know the result.

MemberSara,
My number one tip: “Put your mind into the clients head”. It's the client who knows what he wants, but he cannot express it, so fist listen, then try to mingle your design ideas with his wishes.
Number two: “Never stop learning”. Always try to find new ways to achive your goals. Explore your programs as much as possible, even if you use only 5 % of what cs6 can, try to master or at least have some knowledge of the other 95 %.

MemberThat's the problem, things occur in the same paragraphe, so a second paragraphe style for the same paragraphe is difficult to achieve. The F&C option works fine for short documents, but for docs with over 150 pages (and an almost impossible deadline) it's much too slow.
