I spent an hour looking into this and really learned a lot about clipping paths. Works very nicely- thanks again.
So now have a couple ways to do this.
OK, I have solved this one way. Taking the shape from PS to Ai (copy paste) and then dragging it to InDesign works OK and the shape is a free shape without its own unencumbering background. Would be nice for folks who might have PS but not Ai to be able to drag the shape or copy it over from PS and I am guessing there is a workaround for this.
