    Hello,

I am back with my results. After several attempts I still have no success with merging my medical directory data into InDesign. I have tried to use both CSV and Tab-Delimited files and the data does not merge correctly. I guess the best way to describe what happenis is to give you an example. I have the following information in my address field:

    Tompkins Memorial Pavilion
    789 Howard Avenue
    3rd Floor
    New Haven, CT 06519

Once the merge is completed the result are as follows:

    Tompkins Memorial Pavilion

It looks like only the first line displays for any records which contains multiple lines.

Your suggestions to correct this behavior would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

I usually have greater success importing multiple page Word documents into InDesign when I create Paragraph Styles using the same names in both Word and InDesign. The other thing that helps is I save my Word documents as Word 2003 instead of 2007. Don't know why but it works! :-)

    HTH,
    Greg

    Good morning Roland,

Thanks, I appreciate your reply and indices reference. I'll take a look at the Index Brutal Script. It sounds like something I will need for this project.

There are about 10 to 12 fields that will be used for this merge. The biography is likely to be the biggest challenge as it will contain approximately 200 to 400 characters.

How do you manage a continuous list of records on a page with the InDesign Merge feature? With Microsoft Word I used the Directory or Catalog option for Mail Merge.

    Dear AM and Jong,

Just wish to say thanks again for your tips and assistance on this time sensitive project. I have successfully imported another Word document into InDesign with very little editing. The “Discretionary Line Break” tip was quite helpful in wrapping my text for this project.

    Regards,
    Greg

Wow! Thanks Goddess, I would never had figure that one out on my own. ;-)

Since I don't want all of the soft-hypens, I should be able to insert soft-returns where appropriate, correct? In doing so will this create other problems I need to be concerned about?

    Jong & AM,

Thanks for the replies, however after checking the Page Break, Keep With Next and No Break, Import RTF, Word with No Breaks settings, I am unable to get text to flow to additional pages.

I suspect it is something really simple that is being overlooked. Any other thoughts? Grrr!!!

Update: Changing to one column format didn't fix anything. However, I decided to invoke the Edit in Story Editor command and noticed overset text. So it appears all of my text has been imported but I am unable to flow the remainder of the text onto other pages. This is very strange since the text boxes do have linked text threads. So, help with this problem would be appreciated.

    Hi Jong,

Thanks for your prompt reply. My directory is not very complicated. The Name, Address, Phone, Email information are each on separate lines. I have only text, no tables. I do use a two column format perhaps that is the culprit. I will try turning this off and doing another import.

Ok, I can cope with no additional custom marks.

I have tried to use the offset field but it moves all marks equidistant. I want to customize this distance so that I am able to move the top, bottom, left, right marks independently and to different locations. It seem this should be possible, no?

    Hi David,

Thanks for your reply. I am having some difficulty positioning the marks close to the edges of the layout page. For example, I am printing an 8.5″X11″ document with bleeds on a 11″X17″ sheet. I need to place my custom marks at the edge of the 11″X17″ page while maintaining the crop and bleed marks for the 8.5″X11″ page.

Is it possible to create “custom marks” or does this method only control the customization of crop, registration and color bar marks?

    Regards,
    Greg

Yes, I noticed that happened to me as well. I liked that option. What gives?
