    See if this helps you…

If you are copying text from one ID doc. to another ID doc. and would like to maintain the formatting/P-Styles of the new doc., then paste it holding down CMD+SHIFT+V (Mac) & CTRL+SHIFT+V (Windows).

Now, if you are copying text from outside of ID in general, you'll have to add the OPTION key to that combination.

    Hope this helps.

Did I mention no feature enhancements for Tables in InDesign CS5? Must be the bastard son of features within ID, since they didn't seem to touch it at all. I suppose it must be perfect as is. ;-)

@David: I think that is a wonderful idea. Especially now that this topic is attracting so much attention. The various ways to publish for the iPad platform and others would give some clarity to this next frontier in publishing. As Roland mentioned, it might work as an ongoing series of posts if it's too much information. Thank you for the thought and I'm looking forward to the possibility of a future post on this subject. ;-)

I've created interactive PDF's in the past but I was more interested in the “epub” format for the iPad, iPhone and beyond. PDFs don't seem to have the same support these days. It would be nice if that changes over time but right now, it's technically still a proprietary format and the industry as a whole seems to want to move towards more of an open source format, which I can't blame. I don't understand the big push for publishing for “epub” at this point, when it's just a generic experience. What's baffling is how interactivity is so prevalent throughout the Adobe suites and people are still hyping the whole epub thing. Perhaps I'm missing something but I'm still to hear a compelling reason to focus on epub.

Yeah, I actually saw this video before and was hoping that there was another way but it's looking rather bleak. Seems like the whole “ePub” format is extremely restrictive and doesn't leave much room for most seriously formatted InDesign documents. I've heard publishers having a hard time porting certain publications to the “ePub” format because it just can't handle the type of layout/formatting that you would normally do within InDesign. Still have a LONG way to go.

LOL! Yeah, I've gone over all the new features in the entire CS5 Design Premium. I sort of knew they didn't touch the “tables” feature but thought I'd throw it out there anyway. It's a damn shame because I REALLY utilize that feature big time and would be nice if they really worked on it. At the very least improve the “Table Styles” so they're actually useful. As Eugene said, perhaps in the next 18 months they'll get around to working on it.

Before I address the “drop shadow” question, I will say that I personally wouldn't create one large file for all the smaller images. Every image/product should be it's own file with it's own unique files name (preferable the product/part #). It allows to identify each product not only in your InDesign document but also in your files structure. I sort of equate it to doing a 500pg. catalog as one big ID file. That's putting your eggs in one basket and if something God forbid goes wrong, it can be costly. Plus, you avoid images shifting within the frame and products not displaying correctly within your picture box. Yes, it might be easier doing it your way but in the end you might set yourself up for frustration in the event that one of those large files containing all the small images becomes corrupt. Of-course, that's just me and I'm pretty anal about file structure and organization. Don't know if that's good or bad? LOL!

As far as drop shadows go, InDesign does a great job with drop shadows and I don't see anything wrong with it BUT I would always advise to create your drop shadows in Photoshop. Heck, I would even suggest rotating any images that need rotating in PS instead of within ID. Do I follow my own advice, well, no. LOL! I do most of the time but occasionally I do use the drop shadow feature within ID and haven't had a problem with to date. I'm speaking from more of an old school mentality and many of these rules become non-issues as the technology improves and all these applications start to meld into each other. The Adobe CS suites is a perfect example of it all coming together.

    Hope this helps!
