MemberI have no experience with ebook, but what happens if you remove the dot in the numbered list settings of the paragraph style in InDesign?

MemberYou can do that with GREP within a paragraph style. Make a new character style and choose the stylistic set you want to apply. Then you can nest this character style into your paragraph style. If you want the alternate character only for the e, just type an e into the field. And you can do this for every character you want.

MemberYou have the freedom to place the endnote frames wherever you want them (even at the top of the page), but it may be a lot of work (and re-work if there are text changes).

MemberIf there is an object you can see it in the layers panel.

MemberI don’t think you can do this with footnotes. But endnote frames can be placed everywhere on your page, though it may be a little time consuming to put that all together …

MemberWhat about the layer panel or the story editor?

MemberIf there’s an object in the pasteboard and you cannot see it, go to the layers panel.

MemberNot quite what you are looking for, but if you press the Escape button InDesign will stop editing mode and the text box is selected. Plus you could make a shortcut to apply an object style to highlight the text box.

MemberMaybe the font has alternative glyphs and you can switch between them with stylistic sets?

MemberIn InDesign magazine issues 95 and 105 you can read everything about footnotes and endnotes. With the new endnotes you have the option to let them flow from story to story.

MemberWorkaround: Put the first words with the character style into a separate text frame and apply a new paragraph style to it. Then place this new text frame inside of the notmal text frame (maybe you have to apply text wrap). Then your can select the new paragraph style for your table of content. But this will be a lot of work if you have dozens of entries.
