Try turning Preflight Document off. With a 450-page file, it’s continually doing a lot of checking, which could be causing your issues. You can turn it on to check your document every so often and certainly before you finalize the file, but I would recommend leaving it off while working on it with such a large document.

    Hi Nita,

In addition to Marc’s questions, here are a few more that might help diagnose the problem:

    1. Is the file on a server?
    2. Is there a specific action you are doing each time the file crashes or is it crashing during different actions?
    3. Do you have “Preflight Document” turned on?
    4. Are you experiencing this behavior with other files or just this file?
    5. Have you saved any of the InDesign crash logs?

Have you checked Edit > Color Settings… and Edit > Transparency Blend Space?

Wish this forum allowed editing of replies. Should have said one-word names AND names with no characters other than letters or hyphens.

One option would be \w+\w+(?=\*).That’s assuming that both the name and surname are one-word names, as opposed to something like “von Grebmer” or “O’Connell”.

    Hi Kelly,

Have you tried unchecking “Delete Empty Pages” in Preferences > Type? It’s located in the Smart Text Reflow section at the very bottom.

How are you viewing the EPUB file? I’ve noticed that when reviewing files in Apple’s Books app, it’s necessary to delete the old file and then re-import before changes show up.

If you give the text in the cell a unique paragraph or character style, yes, you can create a text variable that will automatically update when the cell content changes.

David’s suggestion to use pages set up in a spread is also beneficial if your printer requires one panel, usually the right-most, to be slightly narrower than the other pages.

From the Book panel menu (upper right corner), choose Book Page Numbering Options and make sure that “Continue from previous document” is selected and the box next to Automatically Update Page & Section Numbers is checked. Next, from the Book panel menu again, choose Update Numbering > Update All Numbers. If the page numbers do not update after going through those steps, you may need to open Document Numbering Options for each file (you can do so by double-clicking on the page range next to each document in the Book panel) and make sure that Automatic Page Numbering is selected.

I wasn’t able to replicate the issue in limited testing, but curious whether it still occurs if you try using an object style that aligns text to the bottom of the frame?

Didn’t have time to check before posting yesterday, but in checking the results of my first suggestion, Creation Date in the Links panel shows only the date with no time stamp. However, you can avoid InDesign entirely and just open the folder that contains all of the files on your computer. With the window open, do the following: On a Mac, right-click on the window and choose View: as List. Then right-click on the column menu bar at the top of the window and make sure that Creation Date is checked. On a PC, right-click on the window and choose View: Details. Then right-click on the window menu bar at the top and make sure Date Created is checked.

Without resorting to scripting, one possible way to accomplish this would be to place all of the InDesign documents into a single document, then open the Links panel, and in the panel options (located in the menu in the upper right corner of the Links panel), choose Show Column: Creation Date.

If you wish to apply your styling to every instance of s, ss or ß in the paragraphs you are targeting, you could use a GREP style that sets the character color to “None” and turns on the underline option with the color set to Black (or whatever color your text is).

We sometimes run into the same problem when sending proofs to authors via a Dropbox link. Rather than download, they often view the PDF from their browser after clicking on the Dropbox link and complain about issues that don’t exist but show up in the way their browser renders the PDF. Including a note in our correspondence that recommends downloading the file and viewing in Acrobat or Reader is the only way to guarantee that the proof will be accurate has been the most effective way for us to deal with this issue.
