August 10, 2012 at 3:12 pm in reply to: A way to FREEZE graphics in later chapter so that they don't move out of place? #62831
David BlatnerKeymasterSounds like maybe you placed them as anchored or inline graphics. If you just place them in their own frames they shouldn't move.
Here's how to “release” inline frames:
David BlatnerKeymasterSorry, but I don't think it works that way. The SWF is its own little bubble, running inside of the PDF. It probably doesn't even know that it's inside a PDF, so it cannot control the PDF, as far as I know.

David BlatnerKeymasterI'd be happier if you were trying to move 8,000 INDD files from imperial to metric, not for technical reasons but political ones. (And yes, I'm even American!) ;)
Anyway, the Liquid Layout rules in CS6 are meant to help with this kind of issue, but there's no way to batch process them. That said, I'm sure this is possible with a relatively simple script.
Another option: ProScale plug-in from Gluon (which appears to still be for sale, though I think Quark bought gluon):
August 9, 2012 at 8:10 am in reply to: How does a printer get missing fonts in a flight check on a pdf/x-1a pdf?? #62815
David BlatnerKeymasterIf the fonts were asian (Japanese or Chinese) maybe? or, more likely, if you used fonts that cannot be embedded (based on the font manufacturer's settings… there are a few fonts like that out there).

August 9, 2012 at 6:15 am in reply to: Question about single tab–can't stop it from driving page number to next line? #62813
David BlatnerKeymasterI'm guessing that you may have other tab stops in the paragraphs that you need to get rid of.
Here is a great multi-article piece on tab stops and leaders:
David BlatnerKeymasterYou're probably exporting PDF/X1-a files. If they're just proofs, you should probably send PDF/X4 or just change the Compatibility to Acrobat 6 or later.
August 6, 2012 at 4:00 pm in reply to: How to eliminate all line spaces in what I just added? #62780
David BlatnerKeymasterYou should be able to use edit > find/change to remove spaces, no?
There are lots of ways to remove spaces. For example, check out the “Remove Trailing Whitespace” option in the Query popup menu in the find/change dialog box.
August 6, 2012 at 12:53 pm in reply to: Help me understand how to create this particular Style…. #62771
David BlatnerKeymasterSounds like maybe you also have Drop Caps turned on for that paragraph style? Maybe there are some other local formatting styles applied, too? After applying the paragraph style, do you see a + symbol in the paragraph styles panel?
David BlatnerKeymasterI don't know what MoT'd means, but this blog post might help:
August 2, 2012 at 3:02 pm in reply to: Can't figure out WHY I can't place RTF file–I do see Overset, but can't find problem! #62748
David BlatnerKeymasterAre you trying to Place the InDesign file into another InDesign file? Or Open their InDesign file?
As for the RTF file not importing all the way, this might help:
David BlatnerKeymasterI think it is very unlikely that Adobe will do this anytime soon. But I wish they would do something like Adobe Collage for InDesign (so you can start a design on the ipad and then finish it on the desktop).
August 2, 2012 at 1:24 pm in reply to: When Word didn't flow into Indesign frame right–how to I get ALL pages to fit? #62745
David BlatnerKeymasterGo TX Hill Country! (I have family from Boerne.) ;)
You're saying that the text is actually sitting outside the text frame? That seems REALLY weird.
I'm not sure why you lost your bold and italic. That sounds weird.

August 2, 2012 at 12:08 pm in reply to: Still can't figure out how to put a line border around a page of text #62742
David BlatnerKeymasterA border? I guess it depends on what you're putting a border around. For a frame, it's a “stroke.” For a table (or cell) it's the border in Table > Table Options > Table Setup. I don't recall what movie I did that in, sorry! Good luck with the mountain climb! :)
David BlatnerKeymasterI'm not seeing any of these problems. Have you tried rebuilding your preferences?

The “tool switching” may be “springy shortcuts” which means: You're working with one tool (such as the Frame tool), then you hold down a key (such as P to get the Pen tool), you keep holding it down while you drag with it (to do something), and then, when you let go of the mouse button, the tool reverts back to the Frame tool. But that is only for when you hold down the key and then move the mouse and then let go of the key — that should be rare.
