David BlatnerKeymasterThere are many utilities for doing this, such as TextExpander, of course.
But InDesign also has Auto-Correct, which can help:

David BlatnerKeymasterHard to know, but I would try:
- Selecting the text in the index, then using File > Export to export it as an InDesign Tagged Text file, then deleting the index, then trying to import the text again…
- If that doesn't work, then try importing the index tagged text file into a new document
- If that doesn't work, try the whole thing again but exporting as an RTF file isntead of tagged text
It does sound as though something is icky in that index!
One other thing: You're not using a new 2012 mac, are you? There were lots of crashing problems earlier this year when the new macs came out.

David BlatnerKeymasterJust keep a backup… for example, open the document and choose “Save As” and change the name to “MyFile_ImMessingThisOneUp” then make your changes. Later, you can delete this whole file and go back to the original one.

David BlatnerKeymasterHave you:
- Tried deleting all the images in the document, then doing an IDML export?
- Tried deleting all the index entries in the document: https://creativepro.com/how…..ntries.php and then trying the IDML trick?
- If both of those don't work, then try deleting all the text in the main story and doing the IDML. (In other words, keep trying to remove stuff until the IDML works. When it works, then, in theory, you will have found the corrupted culprit.)
Keep a clean backup, of course, so you can go back to it if you need to.
David BlatnerKeymasterI'm sorry, I still don't understand the problem. You can just select the column and apply a align-on-decimal tab stop. Or you can apply it in a paragraph style.

David BlatnerKeymasterI would make a copy of the file, then delete half the pages and try to export the IDML. Then delete the other half and export. Or find what image or text frame is getting in the way of a successful export. Keep deleting things (maybe just image at a time) until you figure it out. Sounds horrible! InDesign doesn't usually do this.

David BlatnerKeymasterBacking up the file usually just means making a copy to another folder, or doing a File > Save a Copy.
I don't know what could have gone wrong with your file, but it sounds like something is very bad.
Can you export the file as IDML, then open that new IDML file back in InDesign?

David BlatnerKeymasterIt could be the graphic… are you saying that you cannot open that IDML file then succesfully export a new IDML file? That would indicate that there is some significant corruption somewhere. I don't know why it would do that.
Here's some good info for troubleshooting: https://creativepro.com/fin…..n-file.php
David BlatnerKeymasterNumber Adjuster might help with at least part of the puzzle:

David BlatnerKeymasterYou definitely want to make sure you have the latest version of InDesign. Choose Help > Updates, and get 7.0.5, or whatever it offers.
David BlatnerKeymasterAre you sure it's a static caption, not a live caption? Live captions have to fit onto a single line, so letterspacing gets squished when the column is too narrow.
Yes, we don't allow uploading of images here, but you can put it on imageshack.us or something like that and then link to it here.
David BlatnerKeymasterAnother possibility comes to mind: It's possible, too, that this is from the fonts. You might try exporting as different flavors of PDF (pdfx/1a, x/3, etc) until you find one that works. Also, maybe set the font subsetting to zero percent instead of 100%.
David BlatnerKeymasterWell, I would guess that it is Acrobat, not InDesign. Seems unlikely that something you're doing in InDesign would affect how Acrobat prints. I would check your print dialog box settings, and especially your printer driver settings.

David BlatnerKeymasterVery weird. Haven't seen that. I would suggest Word doc corruption. Try doing a Save As and importing the new file into InDesign? Or try saving on a different computer?
David BlatnerKeymasterNot sure what you mean by “print the pdf.” What program are you printing from? Are you using file > export to make your pdf and then printing from Acrobat?
