That's right. And the recert is online, so it's cheaper and easier.

Check out the sample chapter from the ebook. Test yourself. I bet you'll do better than you fear! Gam-ba-te!

That's exactly why we did the “The InDesignSecrets Guide to the InDesign CS5 ACE Exam” ebook!

Unfortunately, we don't currently have plans to update this for CS6, but I think the CS5 book would certainly be a good place to start.

Maybe you have “Justify All Lines” selected for the horizontal alignment for the paragraph instead of left or just normal justified? Also, check settings in Text Frame Options, including vertical justification.

I don't know if anything can do that automatically, but if anything can, it would be World Tools at In-tools.com. Check that out!

I like to think of EPUB as a Word document: it's basically a linear flowing document in which you can change the font, the type size, margins, and so on. There are, however, fixed layout EPUBs (just like there are word docs that appear to mimic what you can do in InDesign).

Looking forward a few years, there is a reasonable chance that a LOT of what people are doing in PDF will be done in EPUB. But it's going to take a while to get there.

Are the styles in the library in style groups, too?

The problem is that I think InDesign sees the style groups as part of the name. For example, you can have “para1” inside a style group (folder) called “A” and another “para1” inside a group called “B” — so InDesign actually thinks of these as called “A:para1” and “B:para1”. The result is that if you bring in some text with a “para1” style, InDesign says “I do not have that style!” and it creates a new one (outside of the style groups).

However, my use of the colon “:” is not exactly true. I have not found any way to name styles so that it knows to put them into the style groups.

I have been complaining to Adobe for many years about this. And this is one reason why I cannot recommend using style groups/folders. It is very frustrating.

I would restart the computer. If that doesn't work, rebuild InDesign preferences (search this site for instrux).

Weird! Can't think of what InDesign is thinking about there. Did you try rebuilding your preferences? Maybe close docs first? I have plugged and unplugged data projectors many times, but haven't run into that.

copy and paste is the worst way to get formatted text (or text with any special characters) into InDesign. I strongly recommend saving it as a .doc or docx or .rtf and then using File > Place in InDesign.

When deleting paragraph styles, choose “replace with no paragraph style”

Then select pages in pages panel and choose Override All Master Page Items from the pages panel menu.

But WHY would you want to do this?

I don't think this is possible, but you could (I suppose) apply a “variation” paragraph style to those styles, then do a grep find/change to add “– variation” at the end of the paragraph for just those.

What happens if you make them 500 x 335 px at 72 ppi in Photoshop instead?

Why would you want something at 350 ppi? Too high for most output needs.

    I would try several features:

    • Balance Ragged Lines
    • Hyphenation (from the Control panel flyout menu) — try adjusting the slider in that dialog box
    • Justification (also in the Control panel flyout menu) — You can adjust word spacing there.
    • Adobe Single-Line Composer — when you choose single line instead of paragraph, you can adjust lines and not have previous lines change.

All of these are inside paragraph style definition, too, of course.

This is one of the reasons people use InDesign Server, or a scripted automation built by a developer. You might want to talk with the folks at PrintUI.com or SiliconPublishing.com or Rorohiko.com, for example.

I'm glad you got it working, but I'm sorry I don't have a good answer to your question… drat. One problem: the templates no longer ship with InDesign and I don't have CS2 on my machine to check anymore.
