David BlatnerKeymasterSalieri: That’s great! InDesign is a layout program. Photoshop is not a layout program, but people think you should use it as a layout tool. InDesign is the obvious choice, in my opinion, for laying out anything that involves text and graphics.
I have been pushing Adobe for years for a true InDesign-to-Photoshop (or InDesign to Illustrator) workflow that would maintain layers. For example, wouldn’t it be great if we could export as PSD? Or if Photoshop could open a PDF file and maintain the layers?
David BlatnerKeymasterYou can do a lot more using animations than you’d think, but you have to get creative. For example, check out this tutorial:
https://creativepro.com/build-a-moving-bike-using-flash-in-indesign-part-1.phpHere’s another clue:
https://creativepro.com/using-reverse-to-slide-in-and-slide-out-an-animation.phpSandee Cohen and Diane Burns will be covering all kinds of animation tips and tricks at PePcon this year (https://pepcon.com)
David BlatnerKeymasterJo, take a look at this:
https://creativepro.com/import-word-files-into-indesign-remove-local-formatting-but-keep-italics-and-bold.phpAnne-Marie Concepcion also has an excellent course at lynda.com that talks about how best to work with Word files in InDesign.
David BlatnerKeymasterLooks like our indesign scripters are not online at this time. You cannot use InDesign’s normal find/change to do that, no. I assume it could be done with scripting, though.
David BlatnerKeymasterThat is very strange. If you try to log in to your computer with a different account (like the Guest account), does it work? My guess is that it is a system problem, not an InDesign problem.
David BlatnerKeymasterBTW, it’s funny you would bring this up, because we’re currently editing the May issue of InDesign Magazine now, and it’s all about food and there are a couple articles about cookbooks. :-)
David BlatnerKeymasterIt’s a great question. You could do this with a single text frame, but only with a lot of work. I would likely do this with five text frames: heading, title, ingredients, recipe, and footer. I would probably put empty frames on a master page (well, the footer and page number would not be empty) and then fill them in on the document pages.
If you’re just starting, you might consider watching my InDesign Essential Training course at lynda.com. If you don’t have a subscription, you can get a free trial here: https://www.lynda.com/trial/indesignsecrets
David BlatnerKeymasterRemember that InDesign has its own Separations Preview feature which might be able to help clear this up. Claudia McCue wrote about the Separations Preview panel in detail in Issue 67 of InDesign Magazine.
David BlatnerKeymasterAre any of the other stroke effects working?
David BlatnerKeymasterNot sure, but FrameReporter might help: https://www.rorohiko.com/wordpress/indesign-downloads/framereporter/
David BlatnerKeymasterOh, I thought you wanted it just at the end of the story.
Yeah, there’s just no good/easy way to do this. That is an unusual design, for sure.
Good luck!
David BlatnerKeymasterNot sure what you mean by “keep things all the way around.” If you add 6 pt inset spacing on the left and right, and it’s a 2 column frame, then you’d need to come up with 12 points somewhere to keep the columns the same width — either by subtracting that from the column gutter or by making the frame wider.
David BlatnerKeymasterIt’s tricky with a line — you typically need to apply an object style to the line before cutting and pasting the line in. And for what you want, the line has to be anchored as the last character in the story, which is dangerous because it’s too easy to delete it when you’re editing text.
That said, check out this IDML file and see how it works. Add and remove text and you’ll see that it adjusts.
David BlatnerKeymasterGlad you got it fixed. That is definitely one of the more weird problems I’ve seen recently.
David BlatnerKeymasterSounds like the fields are filled with white in Acrobat? You may need to edit those in Acrobat.
