Black point compensation means “make the darkest black in the source space also the darkest black in the target space.” If it is off, then you might not get as dark black as you expect/want. So yes, generally I think you do want this turned on.

I believe it is turned on by default for InDesign conversions.

Nitin: As I said above, I don’t think there is any way to name styles for style groups. Instead, you would probably need to write a script that runs as part of the XML import.

I’m not sure… can a script look inside a placed graphic?

The Preflight panel can track whether there are any spot colors in the document. If you have placed a graphic with a spot color, then InDesign should add that spot color to the Swatches panel, so that would trigger that warning.

The Package feature alerts you to RGB images inside the document. So you could start package to see if there is an alert, and then cancel.

I definitely like the idea of setting up a place where scripters can make money… but it is tricky. In general, I think scripters should simply respond either “That is possible, and here is a free script” or “That is possible, but it would take some time to develop, so I would have to charge for it. Please contact me…”

As long as the placed image has an embedded RGB color profile, and you are outputting to the proper CMYK profile, then the results should be identical.

I believe the only possible differences could be the rendering intent (which you can control in Photoshop, but few people do), and the fact that the export to PDF is also converting the image to JPEG. Have you tried exporting to PDF with Zip compression instead? (zip is lossless)

Importing files from non-English languages can be tricky! Diane Burns wrote about this in some detail in her 3-part series in InDesign Magazine: https://creativepro.com/issues/issue-12

It could simply be an encoding problem in the Excel file, or that InDesign isn’t recognizing the encoding in the font on import.

in reply to: How to divide a single page layout to multipage layout #98645

I think there are two methods: the pages panel or the document-in-document method… I don’t have time to write them all out clearly at the moment, but I’ll explain in a blog post soon.

Here’s the quick steps for the first method:
    1. Make a new master page which is a multi-page spread (like 3-page spread)
    2. Make sure Allow Spread to Shuffle and Allow Doc to Shuffle are turned off
    3. Add a couple of extra blank pages to your document
    4. Turn your document page into a 3 page spread
    5. Apply the master page to the three spreads.

It’s crazy, but it seems to work. Like I said, I’ll write it up with screen shots soon.

Yeah, there’s no way to make the column guides go away, and no way to put them on a layer. But you could, for example, make the left and right margins zero, which would make the column guides the same as the page edge. Then you could draw your own column guides… but they’re not really the same.

Michel, can you please drop this discussion and move on? As you said above: Thread closed!

in reply to: Script to convert all colors to CMYK Process? #98565

One way to do this is by changing your color swatches to “spot colors” and then using ink manager to alias them to another spot color (50% black) and then tell that 50% black spot color to convert to process in the Ink Manager. I describe this here:

Ross: As Michele mentioned, you can simply place it as a graphic.
Or… are you trying to import it as editable objects and text? InDesign cannot import PDF files as editable objects, but there are some tools that allow you do this, such as PDF2ID from Recosoft and DTP2ID from Markzware.

Luis, what do you mean by 50% black? Are you trying to convert spot colors to process colors? Or change one color to another color?

Lynn, just to be clear: Are you talking about an Info menu? (InDesign doesn’t have one.) Or the Info panel (what you get when you choose Window > Info)? What do you mean hit Return?

Sharlene: The quick answer is “no, data merge does not work on files in a book.”
But there are scripted and third-party solutions that might work for data publishing. If you’re looking for book-length automated publishing, you might look at what Typefi.com offers.

That is definitely strange. I know how to change it in Presentation mode (see link below), but I don’t know what shortcut might be changing it in Preview mode. Are you somehow turning on/off View > Match Pasteboard to Theme Color?
