Ian, these are working for me with same OS and version. Double check your Edit->Keyboard Shortcuts, then it might be time to rebuild your Preferences?

René, check your Preferences->Type->Smart Text Reflow – should be checked.

If your final output is CMYK, you should think and work in CMYK mode (use CMYK color sliders). RGB has a wider gamut than CMYK, so a precise conversion is not possible.

Not sure what’s happening with your transparent .ai image, but make sure you don’t have any Spot Colors in both your .ai and .indd file.

Walter, I have to suggest you do some InDesign 101 tutorials to understand how it works. To place an image, File->Place. InDesign calls these “Links” because the image is not actually in your document, it’s linked to it. To replace the link in the Yearbook document, click on it, Window->Links, there is a link symbol at the bottom, click it and you can navigate to a different picture to replace it.

Never seen that either, Neil. Did you try exporting as IDML? It’s also a good habit to Save As over your InDesign file occasionally to clear out the cobwebs (technical term).

That doesn’t sound right! Did you try Story Editor to make sure it’s not entering the characters twice?

Edit > Edit In Story Editor

Otherwise, sounds like a memory problem or *gasp* Reset Preferences.

Those are likely errors that you can ignore; you will have to replace Fonts and Links (photos, artwork, etc.) yourself. File->Package in the beginning and end of your InDesign projects. InDesign’s default is to keep Document fonts and Links separate from the .indd file. That’s to keep the file size down and keep you working faster. You need to activate any fonts you want to use, if you have access to typekit.com, try it out.

If you need help with those files, let me know. I uploaded them in a hurry!

Jeff, we can’t teach you how to use InDesign overnight, but I strongly suggest you learn Paragraph Styles, Character Styles and Object Styles immediately! They are crucial to managing long documents like this, and I set up some basic ones in this template.

You gave me a good excuse to set up a folder of InDesign templates, etc.:

Right, you may look at other ways to manage text. Understanding Paragraph Styles and Character Styles is most important. You can also link to Word Documents and Excel files (not just place them), then you can update the text in Word or Excel and have it apply to your InDesign document. Preferences->File Handling->Create Links When Placing Text and Spreadsheet Files.

Also, you can make a New->Book and add individual documents to it. Then you can apply Styles to every document that’s in the book. You can also use Find->Replace in All Documents in a Book. This is a bit complicated, but may help you.

If you can post a sample of your project, or a screenshot, we can help you more.

    Jeff,

I’ve worked on several yearbooks doing pre-press, and no two are alike! When it comes to organizing photos/names, I recommend using Tables and have them flow from page to page. This makes it really easy when you have to insert or delete a person. Keep any text .5″ away from the spine and ask your printer for specs before you get too deep. I can make you a sample page if that’ll help.

I’m a bit confused by what you are trying to do, but here it goes.

The image and the text are completely separate frames in InDesign. Use Layers if it helps. 1. File->Place your image. 2. Drag your text from the Library, and make changes. Personally, I use Paragraph Styles to format my text, so I can place it all at once, apply Paragraph Style, then copy/paste/flow as needed.

You may want to try either exporting it into a few PDFs (combine them after if needed) or saving it in pieces (pages 1-10, etc) and using the Book feature. File->New…Book.

Also, there’s always a chance that the fonts are bad (free, cheap, stolen) so take a look at those too.

Good luck—embedding is a nice feature in InDesign, but not meant for image-heavy projects like that.

Okay, here is the follow-up dumb question. Why are Dashed/Wavy, Right Slant Hash separated from the others? (I thought because I had edited or created them, but maybe not.)

The main reason I ask is because on several documents, Right Slant Hash has been applied to strokes as the default. I am not sure why that happens (maybe user error). It looks the same as a Solid stroke on my screen, so it’s an unpleasant surprise when printed.

If you’re using Creative Cloud, Typekit is #1 (for online fonts). Next is https://dafont.com, https://www.fontsquirrel.com, https://www.flashkit.com/fonts/
