ParticipantAs a relatively new discoverer of scripts, I’m blown away by how it has changed my life.
The best ones so far have been
David Morgan’s insta-export
Peter Kahrel’s index by character
Multi-Find/Change (I forget the author)My approach is to try something for free (that’s a must) and if I love it, I offer payment whether or not it’s requested. I even ask the writer what it’s worth to him/her. I just can’t see myself benefitting so greatly and not paying for it.
And for those freebie searchers out there, any app that I pay for, even a nominal fee, ends up incomparably more functional.

ParticipantI see this post is old, but I hope I can still get an answer.
Every time I need to update the catalog in question I’m frustrated anew.
And I now have a second book with color coded chapters which needs to be updated annually. I’ll need to manually load style sheets there too, as I’m about to modify some of the style sheets.
I have the chapter color named identically in each chapter, but I can’t sync my style sheets across the book simply because the swatches sync as well, whether or not I have the swatches checked off.Michel, how would it help to use your script if I’m instructed to first sync the book? Once I sync the book, the swatches all become identical.

ParticipantResolved!
The good news is, Adobe fixed it. I went to their website, got a live chat, and the tech offered to fix it.
The bad news is, it took her forever! She requested control of my screen which I gladly gave, but watching her do the fix was painful. Either her connection was slow, or she’s not very adept at mac. She said she’s resetting the preferences (which I had already done). I didn’t pay close enough attention to repeat all her steps here, but it seems to me she stopped all Adobe activity in the activity monitor window. Then she played with permissions of various folders.
I just wish she had given me instructions and let me do it myself. The crazy thing is, this symptom just showed up on a different mac here, and I’m beginning to suspect it’s the keyboard brand I’m using. We have the Macally keyboards.
I guess I’ll keep you updated.Civi Bernath
ParticipantI just upgraded to CC 2019, reset the preferences and the hand tool is still there.
Frustrating! I can’t use InDesign at all. Unless someone can offer me a workaround.Civi Bernath
ParticipantI’m using InDesign 2017 on High Sierra and this problem just began. Restarting InDesign doesn’t help, nor does restarting my mac!
Somebody, please help!Civi Bernath
ParticipantI just developed the same problem for the first time! Anyone out there has a suggestion? I tried restarting and changing the keyboard, to no avail.

ParticipantI can’t believe I read a conversation that I could have written myself!
I did think of moving the item away from the inside gutter, and a quarter point is sufficient, but it’s technically wrong. If I print a spread it will have a hairline of the background color missing.Civi Bernath
ParticipantSo glad to have found this thread!
What none of you seemed to mention is that when running an index from the book, Indesign actually opens each file. I just wish I knew why it doesn’t open and then CLOSE them one at a time!I have the same problem with a catalog as Sarah did, except that waiting didn’t do the trick.
I need to generate a list of all item numbers in the catalog, with they page(s) they’re on.
I can generate separate indices, but I have duplicate items across the chapters, and I prefer that they get listed only once.I can sort them in excel, but I wouldn’t know how to merge duplicate listings.
Any help would be much appreciated.

ParticipantI just can’t believe InDesign still has no action recorder! I personally think it would be more valuable than in Photoshop. Since Rorohiko doesn’t work for CC, does anyone know of anything else available?
Civi Bernath
ParticipantMy problem is with the index. Since it’s generated automatically, I can’t do any of the above.
I gave it the right indent and negative last line indent, but my client doesn’t want the listing to come all the way to the page number. They want the line to break so that it always has some leader showing.
I hope I’m clear.Civi Bernath
ParticipantI see this is an old conversation, so I hope I can add this.
I have a catalog of about 5,000 items and now I need to delete about 500 of them. I have a list of the item numbers
example:
S123
S124
S126
S138
etc.I want to replace all these item numbers with the word “delete” and then I can find them and remove the whole entry (image, price, etc.)
I do use the included scripts, but when I double click the “findchangebylist” nothing happens.Any ideas?

ParticipantDwayne, if your budget allows it, there’s an awesome plugin called GoProof.
The Enterprise version allows your client to edit the type from their browser, preview it, and send it back to you. You get to load their changes into the indesign file, and voila! The only catch is, it’s 900 English pounds per year!Civi Bernath
ParticipantMy problem is a bit different, but in the same family.
I’m working from a file that was created by a different company.
I apply a paragraph style that is 40pt type. All attributes change properly except for the size, which changes to 36. The style sheet does NOT have a + after it.
I tried this with several style sheets in this file and the same thing happens.
Can anyone help?
If you suggest creating a new file, that’s my last resort. It’ll be quite a job.Civi Bernath
ParticipantThis happens to me occasionally, where there’s no way to release a certain object.
My solution: (until someone on this forum solves this) I put the problematic item onto a separate layer, lock or hide all other layers, and then override all. ParticipantI posted this very question a couple of weeks ago. Since I didn’t receive any feedback, I searched again and found this thread. I also made one universal swatch name across all chapters. Since we’re all unticking the swatches before synchronizing, and the swatches still synchronize, isn’t this something Adobe should be addressing?
In the meantime, I’d love to try the script. I never created or modified a script (just use the wonderful samples that are included in the program). For us uninitiated, can someone please instruct how make a script, using Alexandre’s code?
