Not a great workaround but: If you absolutely have to have items on a page minus the frame highlights, make the page a masterpage. This could be useful for slideshows/presentations, although I would have though Acrobat would have been better? Anyway, masterpage items don't highlight. Or, go to the layer options palette and select white as the layer colour. Technically the frame highlights are showing but (as long as you have a white background), they won't be visible. Best I've come up with…they should put an option on this feature though.
