By the way, just set up a full-page text box and select the number of columns you want. The script won’t work with separate text boxes. Then you can place graphics in or between columns and select Text Wrap to make the text flow around the image(s). I hope this helps.
You simply set up your page with number of columns you want/need, and when you run the script, there are many permutations of inserting the lines—the length, location, how many, etc. You’ll love the script.
There is an excellent script (InGutter.jsx) that will insert the line between columns. Great script…and free!!!!

I’m retired but do have a “business”–design and layout for foreign language professional organizations, including a student magazine, conference programs, and editing a professional journal. I use InDesign and Photoshop and totally balk at the prices. My current job doesn’t bring in much money because I’m dealing with educational groups–non-profit.
I think your idea is spot on!
I have the same problem with InDesign CS6…I’m using a 27″ iMac running Yosemite too with the same screen resolution.
