ParticipantNope. That wasn’t it. I went on to the next bit of text, pasted it into the next text frame and hyphens were back. Tried a few more times after undoing, changing paragraph styles, and cutting (not copying) from Word, and on the third paste the hyphens *weren’t* there. Really not sure what’s going on.

ParticipantThis exact thing just happened to me! Never seen it before.
They’re definitely not discretionary hyphens. I have Invisibles turned on in Word and everything looks completely regular. The words are all followed by a space (blue dot) and there are no special characters, but when pasted into InDesign, random hyphens suddenly appear.
File > Place doesn’t work for me in this situation, as the Word doc’s text needs to go into multiple text boxes in the InDesign doc.
That said, I just used File > Place to import the entire Word doc into a text frame in InDesign, then deleted it all, went back to Word, copied the one paragraph I needed and pasted it into InDesign and this time there were no hyphens, so maybe just doing that resolved the problem? Like, it reset the import variables or something? I’m updating the text in old InDesign docs, overwriting existing text with established paragraph styles, so maybe it’s some legacy issue that’s causing the problem?
Anyway, something for me to keep an eye on!

ParticipantHi Justin,
Thanks for your time and suggestions on this. I think I might have to do some more tests, try things out on other machines in here and see if things are the same. We’re running Universal Type Client, so hopefully we should all be using the same fonts, but maybe there are some legacy files hanging around from before we switched from local font storage? Anyway, at the very least it seems I can fix things by remaking my files in CS6, so that can be a good project for me when things slow down a little. :)
Thanks again.

ParticipantImage 1 https://www.tiikoni.com/tis/view/?id=510fde1 shows sample text in my source document with paragraph style applied.
Image 2 https://www.tiikoni.com/tis/view/?id=5917fe7 shows the same text pasted into a new InDesign doc. You can see that the paragraph style now has overrides, and AntennaCond Regular has been replaced with AntennaCond Generic.
Quite possibly significant is that this problem only occurs with AntennaCond Regular. Copying and pasting any other weight or style (Bold, Black, Thin, etc, even RegularItalic) is fine.
And to repeat, if I create a new document in CS6 and use AntennaCond Regular, there are no problems with missing fonts when copying and pasting.

ParticipantYep, definitely no character styles applied to the text, and no nested styles set up in my paragraph styles, either.
Oh, is it possible for me to include screenshots in this post? I wanted to, but couldn’t work out how to add them.
Thanks again.

ParticipantHi David,
So, now that I *have* edited the [Basic Paragraph] style, would you recommend I change things back? If yes, to what?
There are about twenty Macs in my department. Not sure how they’ve all been set up, re default styles. Do you think it’s something worth looking into?
Thanks!

ParticipantI should add, I also tried exporting my source doc as an IDML file. I brought it back into InDesign, set up the paragraph style, blah, blah, blah, but when I pasted the text into the new doc the fonts were still missing. Only pasting from “document created in CS6” into “document created in CS6” seems to result in no missing fonts.

ParticipantHi Justin,
Thanks for your reply. I tried including a Document fonts folder, but no joy. Same problem.
I’m actually wondering if this is an InDesign legacy issue? The documents I’m using to copy stuff out of were created in… possibly CS3, then they would’ve been updated to CS5 and CS5.5, and I’m now running CS6. I came to this conclusion after doing the following the test.
In my source document I created a brand new paragraph style. It used my defaults, so AntennaCond Regular, and I changed nothing ? just saved it. I then typed some text, applied the style, copied the text, created a new CS6 document and pasted. Result: missing font.
So, I created another new CS6 document and set up another paragraph style like I’d just done in my source document. Again I did nothing special ? just created the style and saved it. I then typed some text, applied the style, copied the text, created a new CS6 document and pasted. Result: PERFECTO! No missing fonts.
So maybe the solution is to go back and create all new templates in CS6? Start from scratch. It’d be a pain, but if it worked, life would be very good. :)

ParticipantHup. Worked it out. So there was a Header paragraph style and a Body Text paragraph style that were both used in a single column text frame. The Header paragraph style was set to Span Column, though, which seemed to override the Single Column setting of the Body Text paragraph style.
I changed Column Span in the Header style back to Single Column and woosh, the footnotes in the body text shot down to their proper place at the bottom of the page. Not sure if I've explained it clearly, but anyway, problem solved. :)
Lesson learned: be careful with Span Columns in single column text frames.

ParticipantThanks for your reply. Is there some trick to uploading screenshots from my computer? Clicking on the 'Insert image' button only gives me the option of using a URL. Dragging and dropping into this reply doesn't work either.
But basically, wherever a footnote reference appears in InDesign, the footnote itself sits right underneath it, not in the usual spot at the bottom of the page. I've tried toggling every option, including the 'Place End of Story Footnotes…', looked at Frame Options, rebuilt footnote paragraph styles, but nothing seems to work.
They're definitely footnotes in the Word doc, and I've used Show Import Options in InDesign to confirm that InDesign is importing footnotes.
Very weird.
