I, too, had the same glitch but I run XP SP2. And I can't recall exactly what the heck I did!
I can't remember if I:
a) Updated either Bridge or InDesign
b) Rebuilt Preferences in either, or
c) Changed some Windows setting.
I am very cautious to not to play with the above as I wait to do anything until I get a confirm that all is OK. Like the recent Acrobat 8 up-daters that have caused so much trouble recently. But I did get .indd files to open from Bridge. That I am sure of.

This is also something I find very useful at my job.
I installed everything the way you instructed, saved the .indd file, et all, but I don't get a populated Inspector Panel. But the Metadata is all there.
