MemberHi Ken,
Thank you for your response. After much trial and error I found out that if I didn’t include the cover image in the EPUB export options, everything worked fine. For some reason, by adding the cover image file there, it was messing everything up. I’m getting the file ready to convert to a Mobi, so I’m hoping that when uploading, there will be a spot where I can upload the cover image that will be seen on the site.
I appreciate your help!
Thank you,
Jordan

MemberHi Aaron,
Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately this will not work for a Mobi file as night mode would made the type disappear. We’ve actually decided to forget about the drop caps and go a different route. But I thank you for your help. I’m now stuck on creating an inline TOC with the chapter titles as images, so I cannot set the TOC automatically.
Thank you again for your help!

MemberHi Aaron,
The EPUB that was created in CS4 was successfully converted to Mobi using Kindle Previewer. Originally we used a unique font for a drop cap that was not transferring over when creating an EPUB, so we created an image of that font as a drop cap and anchored them into the correct position. With nighttime viewer now available in most EPUB readers, you can see the white outline of the text box that holds the drop cap. So, what we’re trying to do is create a drop cap, but the stubborn issue as it stands now is preserving any dropcap once it’s converted either to an EPUB or Mobi file. I’ve been reading up on it all night and watching a myriad of tutorials about preserving dropcaps when converting but I’m not having any success. I’ve even downloaded the new InDesign CC to see if that would help, but still no luck.
Do you have any thoughts? Again, greatly appreciated!

MemberThank you so much! I’m going to try all of that tonight and see what happens. What we’re experimenting with now is opening the EPUB that we created in CS4 in Kindle previewer and it automatically converted the EPUB to a Mobi file. At first glance it looks the same, so we’re going to take a more in depth look and see what happens.
If you have anymore thoughts, feel free to let me know.
Again, thank you!

MemberThanks for the responses! Just to clarify Aaron, are you saying that you export from the newest version of InDesign CC or are you exporting from CS4 as well and getting the good results by using the latest version of KindleGen? This is looking like it may work after all.

MemberAmy,
Thanks so much for that detailed response! Very helpful. I am trying to work on it now using your ideas.
I will let you know how it works.
Thanks again for being so helpful!

MemberThank you so much for the information. That's what I was afraid of
I had downloaded the CS5.5 trial to see if it was worth it for ePub but to be honest I'm still having the same trouble in CS5.5 that I was in the my CS4 full version.

MemberThank you for the suggestion.
I downloaded the trial of CS5.5 and anchored the image. But I'm still having the same spacing issue. The letter is much higher than the line of text and I'm trying to move it down (so that it looks like a drop cap, or at this point even level with the line of text) and shift the text properly so that it doesn't flow over the letter.
I read your note about adding a float tag to the css, but I cannot find the jpeg in the css. I can only locate it in the html. So, if I were to add a float tag in the html, what would be the exact code for moving down the jpeg and exactly where in the code would I place it? Would it be margin-top: 2em; (for example)?
Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated. I know it can be done, but am having trouble with this bit.
Thanks again for the help so far! It's really much appreciated! (I've been watching everything on Lynda that I can on InDesign, but I still can't seem to figure it out).

MemberAnne-Marie,
Thank you for the response. I have tried adding space before and space after, but it does not seem to work.
I'm seriously considering just upgrading to CS5.5. Would you say that 5.5 is that much better and easier to create a good looking ebook?
I find that with CS4, I'm having this jpeg centering problem, as well as a couple of other issues that I'm hoping are easier to do with CS5.5
Thanks again for the input,

MemberSo, I thought I had it figured out. But now that I've split the story and created seperate indesign documents for all the chapters, since these new documents are not threaded, there are problems when I export to epub.
What I need to do is rethread the text frames. I've tried clicking on the in or outports to relink, but it's placing new text boxes over the current ones.
I'm thinking there must be a better way to delete pages in my original long Indesign document with out using SplitStory and unthreading the whole document.
Any help would be much appreciated!
Jordan
MemberThank you for the advice and input. I was unaware of the font limitations in epub format!
Jordan
MemberAlright, I just figured it out! I went into the Applications, Samples, Java Script and checked SplitStory.jsx. It unlinked the text boxes!
Thanks again for the help!

I was afraid of that. So, I started doing this, and I've encountered a little issue that you may know how to fix.
I did a save as and deleted everything that came after Chapter 1 without any problems. But when, I I try and delete any of the pages before Chapter 1 (the preface, copyright page, etc) it starts to shift the pages forward. What I mean by that is when I delete a page,(again, anything before chapter 1) it gets rid of the page but moves all the wording forward, so that the last page of chapter 1 disappears.
I think I need to unlink something, but I'm having trouble figuring it out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm so lost…
Thanks again,

MemberHey there! Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to this. Been out of town and all that jazz…
From what I can tell it is the effect (mostly) that is getting jagged. Are you onto something??
Thanks for all of the help,
